AR XA.. It cost about 80 bucks. Shure M91 cartridge. Works pretty good.

How do you control speed? I have to adjust mine for every record I stick on.

"Works pretty good" doesn't cut it for the folks that have that level of gear.

Mine is very stable as far as speed is concerned. I replace the belt about every two years or so. Not all aftermarket belts for the ARs are exactly the right length and width. A little variation can cause speed anomalies.

I know that. I'd also bet that blinfolded 6 out of ten of those folks couldn't pick out a properly running AR XA with a good cartridge on it from the high dollar tables.
I am no audiophile, but I've gotten compliments on it all the time from people who are.

I always thought they had adjustments for different thickness of vinyl or something like that. I noticed when I got mine the sound was too high pitched and I had to slow it down for it to sound like the artist should.

Needle thingie. Now you're using all those technical terms and our eyes just glaze over.

Could it be that some folks miss "the ritual" of playing vinyl? Setting platter speed, tuning the tone arm, mounting the cart and stylus, checking the anti-skating, dust control . . . then reading the liner notes of "Dark Side of the Moon?"

Ah, the lost love of my life, sticking a matchbook under the 8-track in my 1968 Plymouth.

Cleanly splicing a partially chewed cassette tape with scotch tape so it wouldn’t get chewed again on the next play was a high art form in the BCD era.
