Income gap more complicated than we might suppose

I can definitely see this group being the focus of economic development around here. I'm constantly asking myself, "Who can afford to buy these places?" Of course I see them frequently at Whole Foods.

This is a very troubling statement:

"At the same time, some 54 percent of working-age Americans will experience near-poverty for portions of their lives, hurt by globalization and the loss of well-paying manufacturing jobs."

(1) Socially liberal doesn't necessarily mean economically liberal
(2) The right has alienated many intelligent people through their warmongering and insane social conservatism. Fewer people would vote Dem if the alternative weren't so unpalatable.
(3) Obama is more of a centrist (and Wall Street whore) than people give him credit for -- things like the ACA are actually good for business

D/k, as a freelancer, I'm rather liking the ability to buy insurance that's at least OK at "group" rates, and the fact that I have a subsidy to fall back on should I decide to take a year easy.

If you make $250k a year of course your going to be against raising taxes because your already paying a ton of them!

Poor people are very comfortable in this country, they get lots of free stuff. Being on the government dole is passed from generation to generation.

Poor in the US does not really mean real poverty like you see in other countries. Poor people in this country usually are fat from lots of cheap food, always have a banging big screen with the big cable package, cell phones, and usually pretty decent cars.

You can get rent assistance, EBT cards, heat assistance, cable and phone assistance, free medical care, and money for each kid you have with your baby daddy. The baby daddy can work though, just can't be around when they inspect.

Speak for yourself. I don't make that much, but I do OK. People in my bracket and the brackets above me are way under taxed.

That describes some poor people, but ignores the a more serious problem with income inequality. The more serious problem, IMHO, is that we have people who work their tails off who will never get ahead.

My friend from university works with social services up in the north country -- St. Lawrence County. Poor is poor there. People living in rental houses which the landlords don't maintain, so no working stove, sometimes no heat in winter. 20-30 miles to the nearest decent grocery, with no reliable car. Electricity cut off frequently.

A lot of what you say is a myth, at least for people in certain areas. I think you're more thinking "lower middle class" than "poor."

This. "Some" people work smart; while others choose to work "hard". Success and getting ahead is punished in this country.......

You can't live in TOO nice of a house, you can't drive TOO nice of a car, you can't eat at upscale restaurants, your furniture best be at least ten years old, etc, else your friends and neighbors begin to get jealous of your lifestyle.

You have to "fit in"; drive the same crappy ten year old cars everyone else drives, live in a house with a leaky roof and crappy windows, 20 year old carpet, etc etc., shop at Wal-mart along with the other losers, etc etc.

No "getting ahead" allowed.

What country is this, and maybe you should find less nosy/irritable neighbors.

Not a bad idea. But that could have been done w/o the burden of ObamaCare.

So what in your opinion would represent a reasonable tax bill on $250K? Go all out - Federal & State income taxes, FICA, property, sales - everything? To what proportion of said person(s) income is the government entitled?

Given that you claim to be under-taxed, do you make a contribution to reducing the federal debt when filing your income taxes? I don't, but neither do I claim to be under-taxed.

Let me know when you find the "less nosy/irritable neighbors"...... I find most of them want to be all up in your business. Driving a Mercedes Benz of any year, make or model seems to create jealousy. They want you to drive the same crappy Fords and Chevrolets THEY drive. time to "down grade" your life style......

Wait, didn't you post that driving a 107 was too flashy? Attitudes sure vary a lot from place to place. Where I live, people would feel sorry because you had to drive such an old, crappy Mercedes. And no, I'm not kidding.
