2WD is much more fun than 4WD in the snow.

That looks like a lot of fun! Since my truck is 2wd and has marginal tires at the moment that's about how I look trying to go down the road!

I took the 560SEC on the dry pavement. That was fun.

Snow tires rule ok!

On Friday I took the e420 to the tire shop and had four new studded mud and snow tires put on it.

Saturday at 5:30 am, before the roads were even plowed, I went out and drove out of town down the hill to a Toy Run in Sacramento.

The car performed brilliantly, and while I was pretty cautious and far slower than usual. it drove just like it did with the wide tires, in such rotten weather with snow all over the place. WIDE TIRES WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE PONTOONS ON THE ROAD.

It was my first bout with studded snow tires and it was supremely satisfying.

I have 15.5" wide mud tires on the truck and it feels good in the snow. For you metric tire people, that's about a 400mm wide tire.

I have stock sized BFG All Terrain TAs on the Toyota. While they don't have a snowflake rating those tires are as good in snow as any I've used. I carry chains but haven't needed them.

Mmmm snow tires. It is extremely satisfying driving around all the fwd cars knowing that you've got good grip at all four corners.

Sidebar. My street was a complete sheet of ice over the weekend. The snow tires did little against that. I ended up taking the right turn onto my street a bit too fast and ended up doing a nice 360 on the ice.

Long, long ago I did some rally driving. Then I got old and quit.

But last Sunday I had to, as in had to, drive from SE Oklahoma to Dallas, a trip of 170 miles each way. Solid ice, big rigs were bring turned around in Texas, Buses were sliding off the road.

I blasted along in a Chevy van with all-weather tires at around 50-70 mph. Only one lane was open, so I drove in the ice lane to pass those in the clear lane. I passed a number of Texas DPS cars, but the speed limit in that area is 75, so I was all legal.

For all the great stuff that is said about Texas there is one place where they failed 100% and that was in clearing the roads. One area I passed through was so untreated that I was told by the DPS that I was taking my life in my hands and they would not come to my rescue. I told him to give me a call if he needed my help.

It was great fun. I might even buy another rally car.
