I agree, my '96 E320 was one of the best handling "winter" cars that I've owned.
It got me out of a lot of jams when I retired out here in the boonies 10 years ago.

BTW, I've painted the 'barn' a few times since this picture was taken.

I swear by Blizzaks, every set I've owned has been used and stuck to the ground. Even in an unloaded pickup truck

Every stop I had to back up about 25' so I had the momentum to get back into the soft stuff. If I kept it moving around 35-40 it was ok.
My Subaru GL Turbowagon was awesome in the snow with Hakkapeliitta snow tires. The boost would start coming on, and it would throw giant rooster tails off the front tires.
Snow tires do make a huge difference even in an AWD vehicle, but how well it accelerates doesn't matter anywhere near as much as how well it turns or or stops.
One of the things that makes the old diesels so good in the snow is that they do not generate a lot of instantaneous power to the wheels when throttle is applied.
Much more forgiving acceleration in the snow, when slower is better.
My old Subie wagon, which was a gutless wonder, was fantastic in the snow...couldn't spin the tires on a hockey rink....

It's sad but true. The majority of us Americans don't have an f'n clue when it comes to driving in the snow.
