Recently there has been attention in the news about "drug rooms" in Europe where addicts can smoke or shoot up in public; even the use of narcan in the US to treat rather than criminalize drug use.

NO NO NO

We need to put everybody who ever sparked a reefer or tooted a line in The Big House for EVER. If we don't the very fabric of our society will slide down a slippery slope into a mooshy goopy morass of sin and depravity of BIBLICAL proportions!!!!

Or something.

Yeah that'll work. Just legalize and encourage everybody. The country's already packed with junkies, so what's a few hundred/thousand/million more?

We sure wouldn't want to be doing anything to encourage GOOD behavior now, would we? That would be way too politically incorrect.

Did you read the article? That's exactly what they are doing, trying to encourage good behavior by treatment and rehabilitation instead of just throwing them in prison.

Portugal’s move to decriminalize does not mean people can carry around, use, and sell drugs free from police interference. That would be legalization. Rather, all drugs are “decriminalized,” meaning drug possession, distribution, and use is still illegal. While distribution and trafficking is still a criminal offence, possession and use is moved out of criminal courts and into a special court where each offender’s unique situation is judged by legal experts, psychologists, and social workers. Treatment and further action is decided in these courts, where addicts and drug use is treated as a public health service rather than referring it to the justice system (like the U.S.), reports Fox News.

My reading is fine. Would you like me to recommend a book or two about the difference between right and wrong? Some folks have trouble telling them apart.

Yeah, allowing more people to become drug addicts uninhibited is certainly enlightening. The thought of promoting drug use uninhibited, sounds so stupid that only a drug user could go along with it.

Who's promoting drug use?
You clearly didn't read the article. What a surprise.

Is someone promoting the idea of uninhibited drug use?

Portugal’s move to decriminalize does not mean people can carry around, use, and sell drugs free from police interference. That would be legalization. Rather, all drugs are “decriminalized,” meaning drug possession, distribution, and use is still illegal. Treatment and further action is decided in these courts, where addicts and drug use is treated as a public health service rather than referring it to the justice system (like the U.S.)
The resulting effect: a drastic reduction in addicts,

This sure sounds like something you would approve of.....

Alcohol is legal, do you get drunk every day? True, legalization may attract some new users on a trial basis. Part of the allure of drug use is the fact that it is illegal. That attraction will be lost once it's legal.
