Tell me how you speak and I'll tell you where you're from

I found this online quiz at the New York Times and all of my Facebook friends are getting dead-reliable answers —accurate to the very town they live. Here's the quiz:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html

Apparently my accent is South-Midwestern, with three focal points in Amarillo (TX), Wichita (KS) and Baton Rouge (LA). Puzzling, but accurate.

Fairly accurate, I'm about half way between Yonkers and Springfield, although I'm not real happy to be grouped in with a bunch of NYawkers. ;) I can probably blame my late mom for that since she grew up in Stamford, CT not far from the NY border and had some different pronunciations (without having a "NY" accent) that we picked up on.

Dang! It got me perfect!

Map didn't load. Damned if I'm going through that twice.

Says I live across the entire US

JB3 12-23-2013 10:30 AM

nailed me. Named the city where I live, or 10 miles from the city where I grew up. Since I picked up some of the local accent, thats extremely accurate. Pretty amazing

Aren't you from Spain though? and didn't you spend like 4-5 years in new england? how did you pick up a south midwestern accent? Or did you start in the midwest?

pj67coll 12-23-2013 10:34 AM

Supposedly I'm concentrated in New England with specific cities being New York, Yonkers, and Newark NJ. Of course as a foreigner I guess my South African/English origins don't quite plug in to the US linguistic pattern all that well.

About twenty miles off, for the closest of three picked. and one hundred twenty from the farthest.

I'm taking the full test on the original site. It's very slow. Hopefully it will provide a map.

Will report when done.

I've lived so many places I'm betting it won't localize to where I currently live nor anywhere else.

It gave me three different answers, with one of them being dead on accurate...well, I grew up in the suburb of it. With mama being a 'Bama girl, it bay have thrown it off enough to cause it to generate three answers.

sunedog 12-23-2013 11:14 AM

It didn't do very well for me but I think it's because I spent my first 22 years in northern WV and the last 31 in central SC. I tried to use the answer that I remembered from my youth.

suginami 12-23-2013 11:16 AM

Good Lord, it nailed it.

It came back Irvine and Corona, and I live right between the two cities.

I'm a linguist by education, I've lived in a foreign country for five years, I've flown over 1.4 million miles over the U.S. the past 10 years, and I go to Northwest GA every few months.

I was sure it wouldn't be able to peg me.

sloride 12-23-2013 11:17 AM

The wifey took it and was fifteen hundred miles off.

elchivito 12-23-2013 11:22 AM

Wouldn't ever load for me either. I think I confused it.
