Usually don't like to boast about myself but accepted to GA Tech!
I have been accepted to many fine universities: UGA, LSU, Auburn, and Ohio State, but today I heard from the toughest school I applied to, Georgia Institute of Technology. I applied to it, like the other schools, through the toughest admissions process, early action, which is another reason I am happy to have made it. This year there was a 30% increase in early action applicants, further increasing difficulty of admission, plus I am a Georgia resident. My overall GPA isn't spectacular but my course rigor has been the toughest I have been allowed to take, and my 33 ACT and just barely making it into the blood requirements for being considered a Native American probably helped.
I plan on becoming some sort of engineer, probably aerospace or mechanical. Georgia Tech isn't my top choice, that goes to University of Florida. That preference boils down to being able to live off campus in the house we own down there and being able to work on restoring some of the cars my mom's friend owns to running condition, a collection that includes two Stanley Steamers, a White Steamer, a Willys Jeep, a 1927 Buick Roadster, and a few early horseless carriages. That is definitely not an opportunity afforded to many people. Unfortunately for Florida, I have another 2 months to wait for that decision. Anyway, it would be great to know where some other forum members went for higher education and what degrees they pursued.

Congrats! GT is an excellent school and it being close to home is a plus but I hope you are still considering your first choice. If you don't get in you can always go to Santa Fe for two years for your AA then transfer into UF. Thats what I did since I foolishly didn't go to UF as a freshman when I was accepted.

Awesome; Much Congrats. I've worked with some Georgia Tech folks over the years. Most recently some Phd students doing research on cloud physics in the center of a hurricane. The folks that I've dealt with from the school tend to display a step above level of passion regarding what they are doing.
Good for you! Mike |

My daughter graduated from GT last December with a degree in polymer engineering. It's a demanding school, but upon graduation she had 7 job offers from which to choose and her job search only consisted of attending the GT job fair. Based on her experience, you wouldn't have time to play with cars. I suspect the course load would be demanding where ever you choose so you probably ought to focus all your attention to your education. There's a time and place for everything.

Congratulations!
I am a second year college student myself. Went to an IB school so I definitely took the most demanding courses but my ACT score was only a 30 and I'm Caucasian. Haha I too had UF as my first choice but ended up at the University of South Florida and they have so much more to offer me, more than just financial incentive. Within the first couple of weeks there I started working in a research lab! Then I studied abroad in Germany last summer and the only thing I really paid for was air fair. I am also studying abroad this year through a special program I am in. I am very happy I ended up at USF. It's definitely an up and coming school and a great research institution. Oh, I'm studying electrical engineering by the way. Can I make a suggestion, strongly consider Georgia Tech. The reasons you gave for having UF as your first choice, don't seem to merit passing over Georgia Tech. And out of state tuition is a killer. |

My congratulations to you. Pick the school that best suits your needs, but listen to people that have gone on before you to their experiences and mistakes they made.
Learn all you can while in the learning mode, and be the best you can be at what ever you do. Good thing you posted it here in Diesel Discussion, or I wouldn`t have seen it. The forum will be here for you when and if you decide to come back. Charlie

Congratulations on your admissions to Georgia Tech.
A friend of mine is the provost and he plus another friend teach in Civil Engineering. I also have friends in Civil Engineering at U of F. All of us were together at MIT. Oddly enough, I teach Civil Engineering too. The engineering curriculum, whether mechanical or aerospace or civil is very demanding. If you aspire to a graduate degree, and by all means these days you should, you have got to keep your distractions to a minimum. I have read that much more than 10 hours of part-time work per week will have an impact on your grades. A number of my students work full time and their grade point averages reflect this. For planning purposes, you should expect to spend on average, 2 hours prep for each lecture hour doing homework, papers and projects. That's 9 hours per week per course. Typical load is 5 courses => 45 hours per week. If you aspire to excel, you will invest more time than 2 hours. Engineering school is a full time job and given the time and resources you will invest in the effort, my advice is to treat it as such. Time management is key. If you took AP calculus, I advise prospective students to take it again freshman year. It will be more rigorous than it was in high school and it will move at a faster pace because your classes are comprised of very bright students. Being already familiar with the material will give you a break from the fast pace and allow you a bit of extra time to focus on your other course work. - Neil
