Wounded Warrior Foundation warning

Not much goes to wounded warriors, mostly into organization cost & salaries...Consider giving to smaller, and more ethical charities, so that more money goes to the intended recipients. This applies to all charities.

Sorry to hear that. Many people have given to them.
I give directly to our local charities.

Thank you, Sir.

Wowza :

"The pie chart percentages ... Total 2011 revenues were $154.9 MM with total fundraising expenses of $20.5MM and total administrative expenses, including outsourced services, of $95.5MM. Note that the total administrative expense includes fund raising. Therefore, as a percentage of total revenue, administrative expenses amount to 61.63%, including fundraising expenses of 13.2%. This equates to 38.36% of revenues available to benefit wounded warriors."

I wonder if Bill O'Reily will comment on this ?

Are they using the funds for some over the top gun shooting range,

to give the wounded dude's their own twisted idea of therapy?

They have a zillion commercials on our various cable channels, and somewhere I thought one of their paid commentators said a majority of contributions go to veterans or their families. .38/1.00 is piss poor. What the heck ?

Anybody know what the "typical" overhead rate is for a charity? Be nice to compare.

As a general rule, I think cmbdiesel has the right approach -- give locally. More likely you know the players and your impact is more easily seen.

I couldn't open the 990 tax return link, but I found their 2010 audited financial statements & gave them a once over.

Most of the ad time is donated. WWP records it as in kind revenue & allocates it among programs. Here's their 2010 audit report. This may give a little more insight as to the programs they sponsor and the costs to run them. Salaries are a heavy expense. Every program has them.

On the face of it, I can't say I'm ready to send my blanket back yet.

Red Cross - 91% goes to the cause.
I believe they are very near, if not at the top of that list.

International Planned Parenthood Federation - Western Hemisphere comes in at 87.2%

These guys seem to have a good service, probably a good thing to check, before writing the check....

Charity Navigator Rating - Wounded Warrior Project

According to this site, 57.9 percent is spent on providing programs. The %'s may be affected if advertising donations are included in revenue and listed as fundraising expenses. Hard to decipher it without further details.
But they only get 2 stars for "financial"

Thanks for the link.

Looking at the last pice chart, it looks like the percent given over to fundraising and overhead has been in proportional decline since the first report. That's a good and proper trajectory.

I am also interested in how this charity compares to all others. Guess I'll have to ask Mr Google for that one.

Here's a link to the Charity Navigator page for The Wounded Warrior Project.

Charity Navigator Rating - Wounded Warrior Project

Not sure where the discrepancy comes from, but they seem to rate higher from Charity Navigator than from the OP linked article.
Maybe because the money they spend is given to other charities, which in turn have their expenses....
