Cool 600!
Today I went over to a local indies shop and bought a nice used radiator from him for the 240D Thedon called pancakes. This guy has maybe three hundred old cars sitting around mostly vws and benzos. Most are hopeless parts cars but near his main building sat a lovely 600 four door. It is down on its bags and the tires look dicey but the paint, chrome and interior look to be concours or near so.
I asked him about it and who owned it. He named the previous owner and the present owner, both of whom I know. He says the present owner wants to sell. I did not ask how much as its out of my price range no matter if it were free. Its a lovely light grey metallic with tan leather interior. If anybody has interest I will call and ask the price.

Sure, no problem....I'll just sell everything I own to buy it....cars, real estate, personal property. I need to simplify anyhow....
No wait I think I'll just slit my wrists instead.....

Bad idea to get one.
Scott Featherman in Sports Car Market profiled these a few years ago..
Here are couple of his remarks.... "It takes a true specialist, with first hand knowledge and experience, to service, repair or restore these machines. For example, the hydraulic system requires a lightweight special purpose oil. MB Part #100 890 00 11. While this looks like typical ATF fluid, if ATF fluid is innocently dumped in the hydraulic reservoir-the system that powers the seats, windows, ventilation flaps, sunroof, trunk lid, shocks and on the early models, the door assists, you have just committed a $30,000 faux pas. Typical rebuild costs: Brake system overhaul, $25,000; front or rear axle assemblies $12,000 each plus $6,000 for the rest of the air suspension system, driveshaft $7,000, Fully restoring a 600, if you begin with a complete decent $20,000 builder, will set you back at least $150,000 "Obviously if you must have a 600, you are better off spending at least $70,000 for a good car with 40,000-50,000 miles that has been maintained, with a thick folder full of documentation. Top condition SWB 600s will bring well over $100k from savvy buyers who are aware of what it takes to make one right..." "If the car runs out OK, and the owner drives it for a year and then sells it without doing anything, he will probably get his money back and have had a good time. But if he comes out one morning and notices the car has adapted a kneeling position at one corner due to the collapse of the air suspension, he should be aware the good times have ended and the fiscal future is bleak."

You can't drive them without the air bags operational. Just a short distance with the rubber inserts to get them off the street.
Kent has a neat set of videos on youtube right now about working on the 109 suspension with Martin Werminghausen. Worth watching for any potential M100-109 owner. - Peter.

I helped a guy named Ken Nelson collect info and parts while he did the restoration of the late Jacques Littlefield's 600. Look up the name in wikipedia, he was the billionaire tank collector who died of cancer and had a convoy of tanks lead his casket into the mausoleum he built for himself. Now the lawyers and the ex-wives are feeding on the corpse. The 600 is still there.

I guess only Limo drivers can afford to maintain a long 600.
A friend in Toronto who operates a limo service has had this one for years. He charges a hefty hourly rate during the Film Festival and also rents it out to movie shoots in the Toronto area. ..also appeared in "Charlie Bartlett" and many other shows...currently owned by Senzel Limousine in Toronto.. The S2000 doesn't rev high enough. You need a mini or smart with an R1 or GSXR 1000 engine in it (13-15k redlines)
