Mass shooting incidents NOT on the rise

Thought a reality check might be a good thing about now. Mass shooting numbers remain about the same, and few are committed with an assualt rifle...

"Instead, according to James Alan Fox, author and criminology professor at Northeastern University, mass shootings have remained stagnant over 34 years, averaging 20 a year, and few were committed by the type of berserk psychos portrayed by the media."

so whats your argument here, that since the US has 20 mass shooting events a year, that yet another school shooting is no biggie and having kids, teachers, and other Americans shot on a regular basis via these "mass shooting" incidents (apart from regular crime) is simply the price of 2nd amendment freedom?

The article states that no ideas or partial solutions or even thoughtful debate related to gun control will work but we should just live with maintaining the status quo of 20 mass shootings a year. How conveniently non-helpful.

I notice the other fact not brought up is the vast majority of "mass shooting" events occur with legally registered firearms possessed by people who after the fact, have all kinds of signs pointing to instability, or legally registered weapons stolen from people who sometimes aren't even aware the loaded handgun stuffed in a drawer they forgot about has been taken by little timmy. Obviously 20-20 hindsight is flawless, but I have to wonder whether tougher screening on just who can have a handgun along with much better standardized firearm use and storage training might have an impact on "mass shootings", even if it has no impact on regular crime.

I had to do a bit of searching, but it seems that "mass shooting" is not really defined. Mass murder is defined as a single incident in which at least 4 were killed, not merely wounded.

From last February:

20 mass shootings every year for the last 34 years, makes you wonder why do liberals hate traditions so much?

I feel so much better. Now I can stop fretting about the 26 shootings on school campuses since Newtown.

Way to miss the point, gentlemen.

The population has increased, mass shootings have not.

This means the population event frequency is decreasing.

If I understand your point, you are arguing that it is time to impose more restrictions on the design and availability of handguns in the spirit of the existing legislation regarding assault rifles. I support that argument.

Is the frequency currently at an acceptable level?

Zero would be acceptable. I await your plan for getting us there.

But it is not rising, it is declining in frequency.

That's the right direction, wouldn't you agree?

Make more babies. We'll get pretty close. Attack it with statistics.
