1999 Ford F150 V8 triton

I'm looking to buy a pickup truck and found a '99 Ford F150 V8 Triton XLT I like. Asking price is $6900, anyone here having experience with these trucks?

$6900 seems high for a 15 year old truck. The only major issue I'm aware of on those is that the threads in the cylinder heads where the spark plugs go are a big fragile. If overtorqued the threads can be damaged resulting in an engine that likes to spit out spark plugs. This can happen on any aluminum head engine (and did on my old M130), but it's more common on this family of Ford.

Yes that seems like a high price. My wife wanted my dads 98 when he died. It has less than 50,000 miles and as I understand it is only worth about $3500.

It's at a dealer lot, I will offer him $5K and see what happens.

To much money. Its a $3k truck.

For that kind of money it better be grandpa's retirement truck, garaged its entire life, and have under 30k on it.

All the '99/2000 F150's 4x4 around here seem to go for that price, the ones in the $3 to 4K are pretty run down.

Unless you absolutely need 4wd, you can probably get the same truck in 2wd considerably cheaper.

LOL, none of you have been shopping for 4x4 trucks in a while.

Took me all of 48 hours to sell a 2003 with 97k 2 wheel drive for the same price. Paid somewhere in the low 5s for it at the dealer auction. If it were 4x4, it would have brought $2000 more.

Sold his very clean 94 trade in with 230,000 miles for $2500 within a few days too. Showed him $1900 for the trade.

Other recent sales of that style F150 is a 97 4x4 with 190k for $3500. Paid around $2500 for it at the dealer auction. A 2000 with 119k 4x4 sold it for $6500. I paid $6000 for it, but it got caught up in a hail storm that paid $1500 in damage. Sold it for a discount with the slight damage. Both sold within a few weeks.

With trucks I always get older men calling or coming in the shop thinking it's drastically overpriced. They are genuinely frustrated because their beliefs don't align with reality. Some of them I've had to show how much I paid for them just to press the point, and offered to call when I sold it for near my asking price.

Wonder why used car prices are so high? Follow along with a dealer at the dealer auction. Buy here pay here lots have skyrocketted the price of cheap used vehicles. They don't care what they pay, as long as it lasts 4 years and all the payments are made, they'll make 10-15k on each $5000 vehicle.

Occasionally you'll get lucky with an individual on craigslist who doesn't know how inflated truck values are, but you have to be quick.

If anyone regularly finds nice extended cab 4x4 1997-2003 F150s with under 130,000 miles for $4000 or less, buy it, drive it to me and I'll let you make a quick grand.

Here's a nice one for four grand, in the previous much better looking body style.

1996 Ford F150 Extra Cab 4x4

An '02 for $4500

2002 Ford 150

'00 for $4200. High miles but it looks to be in good condition:

2000 Ford F150 Lariat SuperCab Shortbed

This one they want a lot for:

Ford F150 Super Crew Lariat

Another one for four grand:

2000 Ford F150

Edit: I think we have this year's Unrealistic Asking Price of the Year Award:

I'm not a big fan of the 5.4 just because I always see them at their worst. Not every blown plug is fixable. Tranny is not that strong either. Least rust prone of the big 3 trucks through.

If it's not going to be your daily driver, V10 dodge 4x4s sell for dirt cheap, can pull anything, and if the body lasts they're very durable. 6-10 MPG is the norm. I bought a pristine 1 family owned loaded '99 Laramie extended cab 4x4 with new Michelins for $4000. Had around 120k.

Chevys and Cummins bring too much of a premium to be worth it, in my opinion.

The 1999 F-150 was also available with the 4.6 V8, which is the same basic engine found in the 1991+ Lincoln Town Car and the 1992+ Ford Crown Vic and Mercury Grand Marquis. Given their installation in fleet vehicles which have seen high mileage under severe service conditions, I would not be uncomfortable with this particular engine, especially since I put 94,000 trouble-free miles on one when I owned a 1999 Ford Expedition.

I do like the older style F150 much better. This is the deal: $3000 will be paid for by an European musician that comes to visit LA to record and needs a ride for the next three months. He would have paid the same amount for a rental car. So the first three months I will have the truck only one day a week, what's enough for now and after that he can use the truck and pay us some more money. So at the end we won't be paying that much for it. This is called "the new economy thinking"

We will be using this truck mostly for building materials and transporting 8 sheep and a large sheep dog. Got involved with a women who runs a small city farm...

Jorn,
Prices vary all over the place. Sure, someone will always say you got "robbed", but in the end its all about condition. ( In that regard a Ford Pick up is not much different from an old Mercedes--you know, the ones that will run a million miles with no maintenance...)
I probably over paid for my current '94 IDI turbo diesel, ext cab, XLT Lariat 4X4. But it had a new HD trans rebuild, and new custom wheels and tires. But mostly it was CLEAN. I saw many over-priced abused trucks when I was looking--by abused I mean ign cylinders hanging out of the column, or seats all torn to shreds, or a dash pad where a radio speaker was held on with drywall screws.
In the end, you and the seller agree on a price--or not.

I'm with Tyler on the spark plug issue--not a problem with every truck, but be aware that it can be a problem. There is a correct way to remove the spark plugs and never have an issue, but many people don't pay attention.

Your description didn't miss my Dad's truck by much. It has about 45K miles and always garaged. From what I could learn it's still not worth over $3500 at very best. It's a 98, but at that age, them being the same model series, I don't think the value would be any different if it were a 99.
