Pretty sad that Apple is repeating its mistakes (San Quentin-type lockdown, closed-minded ecosystem) of the 80s/90s Macs in their iOS devices. Their going to a UNIX-based open(ish) hacker-friendly system for MacOS in the 2000s was an awesome choice, and it's sad to see them squandering it in order to better fleece the average sheepsumer.
They're becoming increasingly mean-spirited and pig-headed as time goes on... http://www.minyanville.com/sectors/technology/articles/Apple-Inc-Whips-iPhone-Users-With/9/25/2013/id/51925 |

Apple makes the Lexus of computers. Those of you who want the MG that needs constant tinkering can buy parts on Newegg.
This is why Apple owns the high end of the market, they just work and have great tech support. I'm getting a 27in Imac this year, since my PC is starting to show its age.

The good thing is that the company almost died in the 90s after being wildly successful in the 80s. Hope it happens again in the 2010s.

I did own an iPhone till it was mercifully stolen. I will never own another iOS device ever again. I have no patience for an OS that's deliberately crippled and which does not allow me to install any software which it and the device is capable of running. The article is not "full of BS" -- we're talking about *uncertified* clone cables, that are electrically fine, but don't contain a chip containing a key that marks them certified by Apple. Multiple people who I know and work with have had problems with those after the iOS 7 upgrade. Basically, Crapple deliberately broke hardware in which the manufacturers didn't pay them protection money. In the example you gave, you're paying $8 extra in protection money and "Apple premium." Uncertified Lightning cables can be had for cheaper, but won't work if Apple deliberately breaks them! This would be equivalent to a Mercedes refusing to start if you didn't install a battery stamped with a Mercedes serial number in it, even if we're dealing with normal 12V car batteries. Or a coffee maker not turning on because you replaced the line cord with one bought from the hardware store. Last edited by spdrun; 01-25-2014 at 03:34 PM. |

The idea of an Apple game console has been kicking around for years, but it seems more realistic now that Apple has added game controller support in iOS7. Although the first controllers from Moga and Logitech only work with the iPhone, new controllers from SteelSeries and Signal use Bluetooth, allowing them to pair with the iPad and potentially Apple TV. The number of games that support these controllers is small, but growing.

Apple is clearly not for everybody, but I regretted not buying the Mac when it first came out. Finally, after suffering with Microsoft products for twenty years, I bought a MacBook and have never had a second of regret.
Some people like tinkering with cars, others just want to be able to drive and depend upon them. That's the kind of computer user I am . . .
