Shaping up for a miserable weather week in the Midwest

Ice, snow, below zero temps. Doubt I'll have much business and can't go to my normal auction sources to stock up, which I desperately need to do. Can't look over cars well or drive them when they're covered in ice.

We had a bit of ice already and my driveway is still covered. Parked my van last night, got out, and the force of closing my door was enough to send that behemoth sliding down the driveway about 15 feet.

Ice expected tomorrow followed by 6-8 inches going into Tuesday... followed by a -4 low expected Thursday.... then another punch of ice and snow going into the weekend.

WTF? Get me outa here.

It's nasty for sure we are setting a lot of records and still have two months to go. On the bright side the Great Lakes will be filled to their normal levels.

Whoaaa...! Did it blow away overnight?

That weather sounds horrific in general. Stinks that it messes up your work. Do you run your own dealership full-time or do you have another source of income?

It is my full time business, yes.

Had a record month in January, so I can handle a bad week, but I am low on inventory. That could ruin the month if I can't stock up... being picky it's hard for me to do.

The van skid was slow and somewhat comical to watch given its ridiculous size. There was nothing for it to hit. I wasn't worried.

This is my first winter in the new house, and I didn't have a sloped driveway before. Previous icing shortly before Christmas lasted nearly a month. I'm not going to use salt or chemicals on my driveway and don't know of any alternatives other than perhaps a flamethrower, which I don't have.

When our driveway gets coated in a layer of ice, I resort to using my forged ice scraper to lift the junk off the driveway. It's got a handle the size of a shovel handle and a very heavy metal scraper blade on the end that does a great job of lifting ice right off the driveway. It looks about like this:

In addition to being nice and sharp, the blade has a serious amount of weight -- that makes it a lot easier to slide into and break up ice sheets. Just don't drop it on your toes.

Slamming the thing vertically into ice also helps break up the sheets, but be careful not to actually hit the driveway.

If you have a well, just set up a sprinkler. ~5 cents an hour at 10 GPM if you pay 12C/KwHr with a half horse pump. But if you are on a municipal supply and pay by the gallon...nevermind

Get a heated driveway system. I know a good vendor.

That will change by next year...

There's this place called Phoenix... Yesterday when I got back from the range where I took gold I went out and sat on my deck with a lemon coke and looked out over the golf course as the folks finished up on the last two holes and fluffy white clouds scudded overhead in a deep blue sky with a hawk circling above and the sun just warm enough to not require a jacket with the air temp somewhere in the high fifties

Ice sucks. I don't mind rain, sleet, snow.

There are some pet/kid safe melters out there. We used to distribute a couple of them but it's just so hit or miss and decided it wasn't worth tying up the capital for a SKU that we might sit on for 1-2 years before turning them over.

Some golf courses around here use pelletized limestone, which acts more like a traction agent, but will provide some melting due to it's dark color absorbing some heat. Bonus if your soil is acidic.
