The problem is most people don't understand how their car behaves in the dry, so when its ice and snow they are hopeless. I've noticed that with ABS being so widely in place that people trust their cars to just race up to a corner or stop and slam on the brakes and hope the ABS takes care of it....its amazing.

True. Driving in such a way as to avoid using ABS seems to be lost on many...

ABS is as dramatic an improvement in braking over non-ABS, as power brakes are over manual brakes.

Even in snow, ABS is far better.

None of that helps someone who is inexperienced in snow driving. Just like all the 4x4s you see that skid off the road crossing the mountains in the snow, possession of a better system doesn't automatically mean a better driver.

^^^

I think the point is that you should go slowly enough and leave enough room so as not to need to trigger a skid. Whether it's a controlled skid via ABS or an uncontrolled one is irrelevant -- you should avoid being in that part of the envelope if possible.

Does a properly functioning ABS skid?

Oh, I totally agree. ABS is one of the main reasons that I take the Buick over the Corolla when it's snowy out, but all the same, I do everything I can to never need it. If I need ABS for routine stops in the snow, I have failed, because it leaves me no wiggle room for panic stops. Just like I don't go 35 MPH until 50 feet before an intersection and then lock the brakes in the dry .

Yes -- if you slam on ABS brakes on a dry road, you'll actually get dotted skidmarks as the wheels lock and unlock rapidly. The ideal situation is to NOT skid at all. ABS is an emergency control mechanism.

I'm still amazed at the number of people who think that AWD will help them stop faster when they lay on the brakes...

My previous work vehicle has ABS, so I had to unlearn braking technique. My current work vehicle does not have ABS, and I have to remember to pump the brakes.

Years ago ( like in 1978 or so) I was driving a Datsun 510 sedan for my work vehicle. I had a drilling inspection job in Altoona, PA, and I was hauling about 500 lbs of rock core back to the office in Baltimore as a fast-moving storm dumped a lot of snow. I passed Audis and all manner of 4WD vehicles as they were off the road. 1 wheel drive and 500# of rock on the back seat was pretty nearly unstoppable.

Same here.

Once while driving through the mountains in a 2wd nissan HB in a snow storm, a subaru blew by me on the down grade, came to the bottom (a curve), and went flying off the road into the center median after taking out some signs.

I had the pleasure of predicting this event from further up the hill, but then I was faced with do I stop and see if they are ok and never move forward again? Or do I maintain momentum and go for the hill?

I ultimately decided screw em' and pushed on after slowing down to drive over the sign they knocked into the road. Wasn't about to get stuck because they were driving far too fast. If I had some winter tires mounted, maybe, but as it was, there was no way I was getting going with all seasons on there.

I did give them a friendly toot from the horn as I trundled by at 40mph
