It looks like they won't have to worry about plowing the snow on that street for awhile. Which leads me to another question, what kind of job do they do with snow removal and salting. The county that i live in is low on salt and sand as i understand it, and read that Chicago is very close to having spent the entire yearly budget already for labor and materials for snow removal.

Thats like San Diego without snow!
They have been giving all their money to an obscene pension fund and letting basic repair / replacement trail by the waysidefor lots of 100 yr old cast iron water mains.
We dont need no stinking snow!!

Most of San Diego isn't 100 years old, though -- I'd say that most areas were built out in the last 30-60 years. So SD has a much smaller problem to deal with.

That is the hugest break I've ever seen!

If this is another of those threads that is saying its because of corrupt democratic party government the water main broke I will have to disagree. I don't think there is any such thing as preventative maintenance. I suspect in this case the freeze was just so deep it broke the pipe.

Old water pipes do break, we have them pretty often here. Replacing all of them Would be hugely expensive especially for a declining city.

This may help.

Yes, simple cause and effect analysis proves the Democrat Detroit politicians and their legacy entrenched CORRUPT bureaucracy are responsible as prime root cause.

The issue has been severely exacerbated by the corrupt Detroit democratic party government, stealing from or using the water department as their personal piggy bank.

* No renovations since 1973, by order of Coleman Young.
* Absolute minimal repair since 1973, by order of Coleman Young.
* A huge "still being investigated" volume of GOV grants and income was used in illegal/criminal manner, unfortunately it has gone on so long that many of the worst offenders are dead.
The Democrat Detroit politicians passed laws/ordinances that have and (and their legacy entrenched CORRUPT bureaucracy) continue to PUNISH = DRIVE AWAY TAX PAYING BUSINESS AND RESIDENTS...
* The massive population loss has reduced water consumption orders of magnitude below design intent for the system = lack of flow = water mains freezing throughout the system..

Just to make you LOL
I think "Ted Nugent" or "Kid Rock" would make a fantastic Detroit mayor, and kick a$$ on any corruption.
Both have a low tolerance for STUPID, and a serious interest in taking out the trash so the Rock and Roll continues..

North America built a massive infustructure fast from a historical perspective to support it's rapid growth. As time moves forward there now is not enough wealth to periodically renew it. Especially as the general decline developed. To me in some ways it is indicative of us living generally beyond our current means.

The most troubling thing in general is our need for absolute constant growth as part of our system. We probably no longer have it and have no way to compensate. Trying to continue like everything was is troubling. It is a nice ideal but probably impossible thing to do over the long haul. We may be and have been building the largest bubble the world has ever seen.

Almost unknown levels of consumer debt plus government debt at all levels is not an illusion. What is worse it continues to grow. If we were to crash is not an option anymore. Everything must be sacrificed first to hold it off.

That may be because there might be no recovery from it thought possible. At the same time the actions taken to forstall it can cause it or at least be a serious contributor. These are not the best of times in many ways. Things are getting better has been a recent slogan.

Then why have we lost three industries in town this week? That is really unusual for a town our size. Retail layoffs across Canada have also been signifigant in the first quarter so far. Reciently the housing market has stalled seriously is a big issue as well. I smell something out there and it is not things are really getting better.

I am pretty much pain free. Thanks!

I did not realize Coleman young was still alive, and am shocked to hear he is still mayor after these 41 years later! He must be at least 120 years old now.
