I'm interested in my genetic heritage and am thinking about Y chromosome, mitochondrial DNA and autosomal analysis. I mentioned 23AndMe because it's cheap ($99) and has been in the news lately.

I did the National Geographic analysis. More expensive. Don't know if there is any difference apart from the fact that your info goes into a large scientific database with National Geographic.

I got the kit for xmas. Sent in my spit sample a couple of weeks ago. They say to allow 6-8 weeks for results.
One of the reasons I asked for the kit is because their results, in addition to ancestry, gave information relative to genetic disease predisposition. I'd already asked for the kit for xmas when it was announced that the FDA had made them stop giving out that info pending it's approval. They have promised that IF they get that approval they'll provide that portion of the data to anyone who tested after the stop date, sometime last November.
So we'll see. I like that they combine all the tests for 99 bucks, and their methodology seems to be rated as good as anybody's.

I found this last week and did some digging. http://www.isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_testing_comparison_chart 23AndMe looks like the most bang for the buck and they have a huge, expanding database.

Now the downside for the paranoiac ….

Google is funding (in part) 23AndMe.

Nothing at all. Welcome to the machine. Mine came back I am the result of a long linage of ancestors in the evolutionary process. My pastor was not pleased.

My wife did 23andme, the results were cool. My understanding is that the site is shut down due to the FDA. I researched this last week when I heard about it.

The site is not shut down. They have been forced by the FDA to stop providing information on predisposition to disease because they didn't ask them for permission. Their DNA ancestry portion is up and running just fine. I was participating in some of their surveys about 3 days ago.

I got the test for Christmas upon recommendation of you all. I am expecting results soon. I am expecting some neandertal in it.

What I read was that their site was shut down because they didn't have sufficient resources to help those understand the results regarding diseases and such. FDA wanted them to be more involved and supportive.

What was shut down apparently was only the disease side of things - which is why my wife did it in the first place. We liked 23andme very much; shame they can't continue forward with the disease side. It was helpful.

You should pay for the test and post the results on Facebook. Post a link to the results so the marketers and information hoarders make no mistake in pigeonholing you.

and be sure to forward the info to your insurance companies

Do you think that if we all took the test, the results would show that we all have a genetic predisposition to Mercedes-Benzes?

That isn't what they wanted at all. Here's the FDA's warning letter to 23andMe:

Considering that the FDA is asking them to prove something they really can't prove, it seems unlikely they'll offer the health info again. I took the test for the ancestry results, the health info would have been nice but doesn't queer the deal for me at all.
As far as the health info is concerned, they still provide all the RAW DATA, and I'm betting that a determined person could figure out how to interpret the health implications on his.her own. Perhaps with the help of a genetic counselor or physician if it was really important.

The punditocracy is sure mixed about the health info from 23AndMe.

As I understand it, the problem medical geneticists have with it is that the engine for deriving probabilities is proprietary. Multiple sites give different results for the same person.

the problem seems to be that there is no scientific consensus on how to determine probabilities of medical issues due to genetic predisposition.
