I have done testing on 23andme.com, familytreedna.com, and ancestrybydna.com.

They are all good for different purposes.

23andme is good for determining your ancient genetic ancestry, but not useful for tracing your lineage in a genealogical time frame. It is also useful for finding out your ethnic ancestry among the four groups: European, sub-Saharan African, East Asian, and Native American.

I think National Geographic gives similar results.

familytreedna.com has by for the largest database if you want to trace your family tree in a genealogical time frame.

I am a project administrator in Familytreedna, so I am good at helping people understand their results and what the terminology means: STR's, SNP's, Haplotypes, autosumnal dna, etc.

I got my first batch of 23andme results. 98.4 European, northern, and southern but mostly northern European. Will I get the neandertal results later? I also thought for sure I was 1/16 Native American. 98/4% is so boring!

Haven't we been reading about the European origins of 'native Americans' in scientific literature lately? So T, you might be 1/16. And sug, claiming 4 'four groups' might require a lot of qualifications, especially if one is a subset of the other. And scientific knowledge evolves !

1/16 means a full blooded great great-grandparent. Not very distant. I'd say it'd show up if it's true, 6 1/4% is a pretty big chunk.

I'm 92% European, 8% Native American.

Nearly all white Americans and African Americans who believe they have Native American ancestry end up having none. A very small percentage of those that test actually do have some Native American ancestry.

My grandfather's Mother, I believe it was, was an orphan. She lived to a fairly advanced age and was very dark complected. My grandfather also was dark complected. Dad always thought she was half Native American but I'd say from the picture I saw she could have been more than that. I am fairly dark too and my dad, and half my siblings and half my kids and two of my grandkids. (so far)

But apparently from the genetic results not.

The walgamuth ancestors came from southern Germany, Nuremburg, and the romans conquered it so there are a lot of dark complected southern germans so perhaps that is all of it.

DNA links Native Americans with Europeans | ScienceNordic Native Americans were actually European - BEFORE the Europeans arrived! and Asian DNA traces Native Americans

I checked out my results again. 100% European....43% French and German, 16% British isles, a little Iberian, etc. 2.4% Neandertal....less than average.

Has anybody activated the part that lets dna relatives access you? I am reluctant to do so for fear of some negative complications.

Activate it. That's the whole point. To find connections with people with whom you share dna.

Yes, of course I did. On both 23andme and familytreedna.com.

That is part of the point of doing dna testing. To make connections.
