Why shouldn't I buy this?
Hi Guys.
It looks rust free and the air bags are done. Yes, the ignition does scare me but I would love to hear your thoughts. Mercedes Benz 300 Series 300SE | eBay David |

Beauty, but why so low? Those are going up in price rapidly, $21K is almost a steal.

The interior is rough. I agree the low price suggests problems. That engine is kissin cousins to the engine in the gullwings but perhaps may have an aluminum block. Getting anything fixed on the suspension or motor might get pricey but the motor should be (if sound) fairly reliable. Of course it has mechanical injection very similar to our diesels.

I WOULD BE AWFULLY SCARED ABOUT RUST.
Especially as the car was in Northern Germany from 1963-1990!

From afar, I like it. Admittedly the rear looks a bit goofy at resting stage, but air it up an couple inches for cruising and it'd be A.O.K.

If all four bellows have been replaced how come it's sitting on it's ass, or belly or whatever.

Regardless of its price, this is a car that I personally would want to see and inspect. There is no doubt in my mind that the car has rust - it is only a question as to how much and where. I don't think that engine parts are free either. Isn't this the engine in which a new distributor from MB costs $3k?
Perhaps the air bags are "done" but apparently doing them leaves a mere 3,428 spots in the system where air can escape. Very cool car once sorted out, but...Caveat emptor! |

I' m not sure it sitting low is a sign of a fault.
Fast and loud would put in some bags, and 22" rims and paint on some fancy purple stripes and sell it for 80K.

"After Leonard retired from Eli Lilly he purchased a house in Panama City, FL. he took his beauty Benz with him. He drove the car as daily driver while enjoying his retirement. During the late 1990's Leonard had some health issues and the car sat in his garage covered for about 7-8 years."
I'm with P.C. on this. SkepTick! Seller's description is a little too warm & fuzzy for my suspicious mind. To me, no way that engine bay has seen only 62,500 miles with "Loving Leonard" as the owner. I don't care if it is 50 years old. It's not what you see, it'w what you don't see. Get that baby up on a lift. NOW! |

This car should go to an old line mercedes dealer to get their opinion on a lot of things. This before spending a dime on it. You would need a dealership with a really old Mercedes mechanic to evaluate this car properly. Ebay sellers know their buyers usually are not astute enough usually.
There could be 20-30 K of work required as well. Buyer beware is always a good thing. On something like this you have to know exactly what you are purchasing before buying and getting into it. It is usually too late after the buy. If the work required is excessive the car is really worth nothing other than for parts. I like these cars but would I buy one without a deadly serious list of every fault that can be found beforehand by a person really qualified to give it? The answer is no in a heartbeat. The real total milage with three owners over all those years is a real question mark alone. The claimed milage is very suspect. There is nobody out there to cry on their shoulders if it is just a covered up rust bucket either. Last edited by barry12345; 02-19-2014 at 04:22 PM. |

A German friend, who owns coupe, told me to avoid W111/112 coupes with sunroof at all cost because of rust inside the B pillars. Something you can't detect but most of all European cars will have because of the way the sunroof draining system works or not works.
