Sounds like the big apple is getting pretty wormy these days.

I agree though that the police ought not to be required to learn and understand the language of another country in order to do their job in the United States.

I'll have to remember that one .

I've jaywalked at 96th and Broadway many times....
Next time I'll have to look out for cars and cops....

I'm sure the cops would give you slack if you pulled that one out.

I do see plenty of people jaywalking in an actually dangerous manner though. Annoying stuff and that's if nothing happens. Can you imagine the stink if you hit someone who wandered in front of your car in a haphazard and unexpected manner? I mean, would suck to be them but then you'd have to deal with a major interruption to your day, week, and month.

Historically, before this "vision zero" crapola, the way it worked was unless the driver was drunk or excessively speeding, he got a slap on the wrist or no penalty at all. Accidents were accidents.

What most New Yorkers advocate is a policy of benign neglect and looking the other way. The sooner a newbie like DeBlasio understands this, the better it will be for everyone. Even Giuliani loosened up after a few years.

NYC only functions at all because of controlled anarchy and underzealous enforcement of petty crap of this type. There are written laws, and unwritten rules. Without the latter, the city would cease to function efficiently.

On the other side of the coin is people who walk into a marked crosswalk w/o even looking to see what's up. You read regularly about people getting killed doing that.

A cop's job can't be easy. People don't like to be corrected and if cops let people just walk away when they were being ticketed, would soon become hard to issue tickets.
Probably not but he should know better than to get physical with a cop. Some places I have been, it gets you a stay in a luxury suite with a little head banging action.

I myself prefer enlightened running red lights where I think I won't hit anything. That or enlightened speeding where I see it is clear enough to zip by.

Must pedestrian traffic I see is inconsiderate. Not only that, stupid. They expect the driver to be able to stop on a snowy road on a dime. Laws of man can be violated. Physics, not so.

If I could drive off legally, I'd have no tickets to my name.

Therein lies the problem. To avoid you, I might hit someone or something else. I support your right to kill yourself. Don't inconvenience me while you do it.

Inconvenience is an issue you conveniently forgot to mention. I have to toss my schedule off because you decided to run across, my car is damaged, paperwork, my deductible, to name a few.

The more people you have around, the more we have to enforce the rules. You work in IT, you should know that.

Not necessarily -- depends on the people. The amount of pedestrian deaths in NYC is actually already very LOW per distance walked compared to other American cities. It's a controlled anarchy that works -- think 3rd world traffic that looks like chaos exemplified but makes sense to people raised to it.
