NYPD officer tackles and bloodies 84-year-old jaywalker

(1) Hope that each and every pig involved in this freakshow gets hit by a truck and spends the final years of their life in a wheelchair, sipping their food through a straw. Sorry, attacking an 84-year-old man is inexcusable over something as minor as jaywalking. It's worthy of severe divine punishment.

(2) Crackdown on jaywalking?(!) This was last tried under Giuliani, and before that under Mayor Lindsay. Yep, went over real well both times. The Hon. Mayor Bill deBlasio (aka Warren Wilhelm) changed his name on one occasion already. Wonder if he'll change his name to Sisyphus Quixote before his first term is over.

(3) Jaywalking is perfectly safe if done correctly. In fact, crossing mid-block is safer in many ways, since you can see cars which just turned at a light coming before they hit you -- most pedestrians get hit by drivers trying to rush a left turn through a gap in oncoming traffic, or making a right turn without looking well.

Crossing against the light? It's a lot easier to look out for oncoming drivers than turning ones.

The Fuzzy Logic of a Jaywalking Crackdown in New York - Sarah Goodyear - The Atlantic Cities

In short -- F**k you, DeBlasio. Oh yeah, and Bill Bratton should go on back to LA where his "services" are actually wanted -- he didn't get the memo when the city fired his sorry butt once.

NY bigwigs don't really understand the commoner's life, so you get stuff like this.

Hearing about NY's smoking taxes- "After increasing the tobacco tax ##%, sales have dropped to 25%! Yay we helped everyone quit!" on another radio station "Approximately 75% of tobacco sold in NY is smuggled in through another state....."

Fortunately, this kind of crap tends not to last. Giuliani jaywalking crackdown lasted a few months. Koch banning bikes on one of the avenues lasted weeks at best. Bloomy's large soda ban got pimp-slapped by the court.

I see the makings of a news reporter here. A lot of sensationalism and ignoring facts on one side to sell a paper. Even from where I am, I can not only see but get some of the frothing all over my table.

I wonder how much sympathy I would get if I struggled with a cop writing me a ticket. Disagree with the ticket if you want. Bring it up in court. That is your right but when you go struggling with a cop, all bets are off.

" before his first term is over."

First term? It's going to be his only term, IMO.

Excerpt

“[The officer] stood him up against the wall and was trying to write him a ticket. The man didn’t seem to understand, and he started walking away.

“The cop tried to pull him back, and that’s when he began to struggle with the cop,” said King, 24. “As soon as he pushed the cop, it was like cops started running in from everywhere.”

Aklim -- go back to Singapore, you cop-hugging authoritarian little man. Seems the Confuse ... I mean Confuscian culture there fits your ideals better than the one in NYC.

Apparently, the man didn't speak English and was rather disturbed by a cop seemingly randomly throwing him against a wall and yelling in his face. The last thing he probably expected was a jaywalking ticket, since they're simply not DONE in NYC. Part of living in NYC is a respect for pedestrians.

You got to stop that frothing, I just wiped the desk. As to NYC, been there, didn't care for it at all.

First off, if you plant to be somewhere for any length of time, perhaps it would be in your interests to learn the local language. Same if I went to Russia or Germany instead of expecting them to understand you. Secondly, it is pure stupidity to fight with a cop since all you will get is more cops. When I go to foreign countries, I make it a point to NOT run afoul of the laws and NOT argue with their authority figures and certainly not fight with them. Nothing to do with Confucius or anything. Just not smart practice. Unlike you, I don't need to be a tough guy. I prefer to just take it, get away with the minimum of fuss and find a way to handle the situation when it is convenient for me. All the tough guy talk like you have does is give the cop an excuse to do something. No cop can honestly say that I was anything but courteous and professional. No ranting, no raving, nothing. I cooperated to be best of my abilities. The camera will show I had my hands on the wheel, no wild gestures, nothing.

Bottom line, should the law find me in the right, I get to nail your hide to the wall. If not, I get away with minimum fuss. I don't have to get hauled down to the cop shop, finger printed or whatever it is they do and take up more of my time than necessary to get over this hump. If the opportunity presents itself where I can make you pay, witnesses will be able to say that I wasn't in any way instigating the mess. It was all the other guy.

right, do whatever the authorites say and we'll all be better off. sounds like a mantra preached in a certain European country back in the thirties & forties.

We should all be able to choose what laws we think are right and wrong.

Didn't say that. Going head on isn't a good idea. It proves how brave you are but it gets painful. Much more so when you don't know what your options are. Had he taken the ticket, gone to court, he'd be better off than fighting with a cop. Maybe he got off lucky but if he had been permanently injured, win, lose or draw, you lose. You can argue with a semi all day long about right of way. You get hit, you lose. You find out what your options are and you might be able to do it without risking yourself. Of course, it won't make as big a splash as you getting your head caved in but you got to make some sacrifices.

So they always say. But what they don't say is what to replace the current situation with that will be better.

Point? Until he violates them, well, he is within his rights to gripe. He is also within his rights to attempt to get the law overturned in the court system. He can attempt to speed up the process by sticking his body out there as bait but he cannot complain when it gets chewed up in the attempt.

There is difference between advocating the change of a law and just going out and violating the law because you disagree with it. Sometimes that is needed as with the civil rights protests but there is a penalty to be paid even in those circumstances.

If you want to go head to head with a cop for a simple violation go for it. Not my cup of tea.

It's an unfortunate story - some pedestrians are a hazard, this guy didn't sound all that bad. I generally prefer enlightened jaywalking myself, that is, actually looking to see when there's a break in traffic and I can easily walk across safely.

On the other side of the coin is people who walk into a marked crosswalk w/o even looking to see what's up. You read regularly about people getting killed doing that.

A cop's job can't be easy. People don't like to be corrected and if cops let people just walk away when they were being ticketed, would soon become hard to issue tickets.

DeBlasio changed his name to that of his mother's family, who raised him. No big deal.
