OK, so wait... your main issues were:

1) Some mechanic blew it by not replacing the WP, which is common-sense procedure.
2) The car was rusty (Ever seen a rusty MB? They just rust in different places, that's all.)
3) A 13-year-old Subaru with bad wheel bearings and a dying tranny doesn't drive as well as an MB.

Is that right? Doesn't necessarily look like the best set of reasons to hate Subies.
x2. Sounds like an abused car rather than a case for the company.

Is this a reasonable price for the work?
The cost is not out of line, but I would first give a cold, hard look at the overall condition of the car to determine if it is time for its replacement.

What's the deal with Subaru's and head gaskets?

When I was in the market for an AWD wagon, we looked at Subaru's and Volvo's.

It seems like every car we looked at either already had it done, or we were warned about it.

We ended up with the Volvo XC70 Cross Country.

How did the transmission hold up for you? I had to have mine replaced by the dealer (glad I bought the warranty) @ 60k miles. 10k miles later is started slipping again so I dumped it.

MBs don't rust there, that's why you wouldn't see rust there. W210s are well known for their spring perch rust, for example. Not a very safe rust point.

Subarus tend to either be well taken care of or totally abused. I'd say this was one of the abused ones, and so rust wouldn't be surprising.

I bought ours very, very cheaply because its transmission was going out.

I learned that the transmissions from '01 to '03 or '04 were all bad.

I replaced it with a brand new one, and it's been perfect for the several years we've owned it.

I've always liked those cars. Have you had any other problems with it?

I bought the car with 125,000 miles on it, and it now has about 165,000 miles.

Other than the transmission, I initially had to do a ton of deferred maintenance (hence the low purchase price): all fluids, filters, tires, timing belt (with water pump and tensioner), axle boots, and motor mounts.

I replaced the Electronic throttle module at 152,000 miles ($500).

Other than that, the usual things like a battery, brakes, etc.

My son bought his 2000 green Outback (no Labrador) for 3K. It had had a dealer serviced timing belt and water pump 500 miles previous. It had 190K on it. After another 25K miles the head gasket began a slow leak. No worries, he kept it full and added the Subaru sealant periodically. 2 bucks or so on Amazon. The downfall was the automatic. When it took a dump the repair/replacement costs were beyond the value of the car.
He sold it for scrap and went out and bought an old rusted 84 Land Cruiser with a good motor and 4 speed.

I have owned and beaten the crap out of 3, but they were all 80's -90's vintage that I bought new for cash. Two wagons and a hatchback. Those models all had actual 4 wheel drive with low range. Great little quirky beaters. If a non-rusty one passed me by I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.

Well, unless you buy it new, Subies typically see more salt and snow than Mercedes. But I don't care for them, as the mandatory 4WD adds complcation, and hurts gas-mileage. Or the engine because of the interference/timing-belt issue, and the flat-four design makes many repairs more difficult or impossible without engine removal.

I wouldn't keep one as long as some are - that's for sure....

Inherent design flaws/weak points.....

Again, inherent to the vehicle's design. Nothing's for nothing.......

I've owned my share of rusty Mercedes, so I can't knock Subarus for that, as a big reason for owning one is their popularity as snow-vehicles. But, with some exceptions, an inline-engine is generally the easiest configuration to service and repair.
A friend owns a 2004 turbo Subaru Forester, and it's engine is among the worst to service I've had the displeasure to experience.

Then again, a pancake engine makes accessories a charm to service, since everything is in front/on top of the motor.

On the turbo Forester, engine and accessories are buried under an enormous inter-cooler.
