Have you ever seen the show Dirty Jobs? He makes some great points about working in the US and the lack of people able and willing to take on blue collar jobs.

Heard of it I think but never seen it. I just know him sort of from Ford commercials. I figured he was some paunchy ex football guy. Or something.
He does make good points about blue collar work. There is no pride in it any more.

First time I ever saw Rowe, he was co-hosting a San Francisco television station's "Evening Magazine" show. I understand that he sang opera as well. Talented guy.

I think he is a failed opera singer and salesman on QVC. This "Dirty Jobs" series was excellent. His congressional testimony advocating for education in trades vs university was spot-on. The guy knows work and honors workers. Wish we had more people like that.

I hire Construction Inspectors. Everyone wants to tell me of their great computer skills. This job does not require any computer skills. Its mostly simply showing up on the jobsite on time, every day. Difficult to find people.

partly the fault of schools "pushing" what skills they think will be needed for the job market. Everyone thinks a computer background is required for almost everything now. In fact, as computer devices become more intuitive and user friendly, it is just the opposite.

He was right. Everyone has what they call computer skills, meaning they know how to use them. Unless you know how to do serious development work, your computer operation skills are not that marketable today.

A person who is willing to get dirty and work hard can find a job.

I think that he did the voice overs for Deadliest Catch.

Yup, Mike does a lot, I mean a lot, of voice over and narration work. Dirty Jobs was cancelled by Discovery a few years ago.

I loved Dirty Jobs...the guy had no problems getting as dirty as he did, learning a new skill each time. I love how he showcased manual labor, and embraced and applauded it. He is spot on in what needs to be done with education to bring America back.

A college degree means very little...look how many college educated people we have on welfare today. These people don't have the skills needed to bring the nation back as a strong economy.

I disagree--a little. A college degree means something--at the very least it means you were capable of finishing something--and a great many people are incapable of finishing. As for the degrees, themselves--many are of little value.

Good/ GREAT computer skills are VERY marketable. A superintendent was telling me about his son. While earning a doctorate in computer science, he had a summer internship with State Farm Ins. He arrived a few days early--the first of the summer interns, and his supervisor showed him around, and told him that the task for the interns was to develop a website for people to access State Farm. He scoffed, and asked what were they going to do next week--after that was accomplished. His supervisor told him that it was a lot more involved than he could imagine. The next morning, the intern presented his supervisor with a CD version, and a flash drive version, and a web-based version. The supervisor took him to his supervisor, who took them to another supervisor, who took them all into a conference room where a group was meeting. He asked if he could interrupt, and they told him "Of course". he then turned to the intern, and said--"Make your presentation". which he did because he had prepared a Power Point. After that the man leading the meeting gave the intern a chair at the table, and said, "This is your assignment--to be here and advise us on computer matters." The intern started to decline, and the man told him to walk out the double doors to the hallway, turn around, and see what was there. He walked out, and found that he had been in a meeting of the Board of Directors. State Farm, paid him a nice salary when he returned to school, paid his expenses, and gave the school a large gift.
At least that was the story his dad was telling.
Some degrees ARE valuable.

On average, one of the few things more expensive than getting a college degree is not getting a college degree. The income differential continues to grow.
