I like the new A6 and A8 more than their MB and BMW competitors. I have not sat in the new CTS but I might like that car even more so check it out before committing.
Having said that I wouldn't own a new Audi I'd lease one, I have no interest in keeping a modern complicated car going outside of the warranty period, or into the 100k+ range. If you plan on keeping it the CTS and MB would be my choices for long term ownership. BMW is just as bad as Audi these days with their stupid electric water pumps and such.

I'm looking for either a 2008+ A6 3.0T or a 2012+ A6 3.0T
The 2008-2011 A6 3.0T has a 6 speed transmission. The 2012+ A6 updated features; seems to have more driver's seat room left to right and also has an 8 speed transmission. Probably won't lease; ideally would want a car under warranty. I'm guessing an existing warranty can be transferred.

2012 A6 euro-spec 2,0 turbo diesel
I RENTED THIS ONE IN FRANKFURT AND DROVE THE HECK OUT OF IT FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS...
Took it through the Black Forest, through Stuttgart and Munich and into the French wine country - then over to a ski resort (summer) near Innsbruck, Austria, over into Lichtenstein, then into Switzerland for a while, then back to France, and Geneva again, and into Italy and finally back to Munich where I finished up. The MMI interface wasn't too bad. The most fun was on the Autobahn. I drove it hard and pretty fast. I ran up and down the Autobahn (legally) from 130-160 mph. Pretty much, almost every DAY! So even that little diesel engine was way fast enough for the USA interstates. Plus, it was comfortable, had very good pickup. Diesel fuel was not cheap ( cost about $8 - $9 per gallon, but that's Europe and why diesels are so popular there- No idea of the mpg, I just put it on plastic and forgot about it. Here's what it looked like outside my hotel in Kientzheim, in the Alsace/Lorraine area of France, in the French wine country.

The Audi's competition: (MID SIZE LUXURY EXEC EXPRESS CLASS
I've owned them also. Driven them each over 20,000 miles.
A 2011 Mercedes Benz e350 with the AMG Sport package. Now I'm herding a 2013 BMW 535i with the M5 Sport package around. Seen here the night last May when I traded the e350 in on it and bought the new Bimmer: "MAYBE" or maybe not (depends on who is asking) had a street race or two with a 2011 ZL1 Camaro SS - and the BMW got its azz kicked. Deserted US late at night aren't as user friendly as the Autobahn. And at 145 mph the cork starts to feel like it's pretty much out of the bottle. The SS spooled up to 155 without trouble at all. Far and away the BMW is (unsurprisingly) the most FUN of all of them to drive. It's big, and roomy and comfortable, but the inline 6 with twin turbo power has 300 hp and spools up instantly - no turbo lag, unlike the e350, which takes its time. 0-60 in the Bimmer comes in @ 5.7, with the automatic, which I have. And it handles the best of the big cars that i9t competes against. You can throw it around like a prison beyotch in a cell block riot.. (STS)...

Well if your going to buy I'd go CPO with a warranty. I'm sure Audi has a good CPO warranty program.

Only interested in German cars?
Go sit in a brand new Toyota Avalon Limited. Try not to look at the outside much. For the price of the diagnostic computers needed to perform basic maintenance and any repairs on these cars, an extended warranty will get you through several years without worry. When the warranty stops, time to trade. The natural evolution of the 126 is the Lexus LS. They reversed engineered made a souless clone, slowly injecting mojo into it over the years with some success. 98-2000 and 2003-2006 are the best, in my opinion.

Mercedes has a good CPO warranty.
The best way to buy one and probably an Audi as well is right off lease. At 3 years an S550 drops in value by about 50%, and you can get your CPO warranty out to 7 years. So buy for $55kish, drive for 4 more years, and trade for $20k-$25k right before the warranty is up. Slightly cheaper than leasing if you can't write it off. If you can write it off, lease. Than let some poor soul who really should be buying an Accord get it and soak up the $3k+ repair bills when stuff starts to go wrong.

Yes, I want a car coming off of lease. If I'm buying it from a leasing company, do I have to take it to Audi to get it certified and buy the extended warranty? I'm guessing I do.

Audi and VW have some of the highest engine failure rates in the industry. Especially Audi. Didn't like my VW and got rid of it, their service dept's are evil and the car was in the shop 7 times in 10 months. Audi are just fancy VW. No thanks! I had less overall issues in those 10 months with ALL the MB's in my whole family, than the VW. I will say my sister has a 2012 absolute base model jetta and it has been fine, but she barely uses it. (had it 2.5 years, only 11k on it)
My bro puts about 20k a year on his 2002 E320 and so far nothing at all has gone wrong 14k and 10.5 months into ownership....nada. Just an oil change and we replaced the spark plugs because it was overdue, and some filters. Has almost 150k on it and runs/drives great. My dad's W210 has also been issue free. I traded my VW wagon for a mint W203 wagon last week, we will see how it goes. It has a full service history and it has only needed basic items in the whole 130k+ mile history. A few oxygen sensors....engine belt, fluid changes...etc. 0 Major repairs at all.
