The New Middle Ages.....
It just keeps getting worse for anyone EXCEPT nutcake zealots in the middle east.
"Under threat, Syria's Christians sign accord with Islamists For the first time in many generations, a dhimma (protection agreement) was signed between the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) – an Islamist branch of Al-Qaida – and leaders of Raqqa’s several thousand Christians. Members of ISIS gave the latter three options: accepting the agreement, converting to Islam, or risking death." I fear the only way the world will rid itself of these adherants to the practices of the Dark Ages is total war, an extermination of all of these sort. And, I don't know if the world (note I didn't say just the US ) has the mud to carry it out. Radical islam is a spreading stain in the world that endangers the peace of everyone if it is allowed to continue unabated. |

I wouldn't call them medieval. They existed into the 20th century in the Ottoman Empire if I'm not mistaken. As a formal part of the legal system, it helps avoiding the kinds of religious conflict seen in Northern Ireland although it could be that the two religious parties there are too closely related to establish a dhimma.

I wouldn't want to live there but I wouldn't want to live in Ireland either where the dominance of Catholicism results in things like complete bans on abortion until recently. I can't think of any religion which does not have a natural developmental pattern towards hegemony. A dhimma is one way to put a limit on that. It's better than nothing. Emasculating religion like the US has done is a better choice in my view since hegemony is legally forbidden but I don't know how widespread or long lasting that solution can be. Sociologists thought there was a natural movement towards secularization so the emasculating solution would spread around the world. That doesn't look quite so accurate nowadays.

One could also say that religeous wars seem back in vogue again. Or that religion is being used as the motivator for them. Factually you have to have something to rally your forces behind.
Reciently there was a serious knife attack in China. Perhaps politically motivated. When they are all rounded up and they will be I suspect. A serious enough example will be made that should deter others with similar intentions. |

This was common during the early days of Islam. Convert or pay taxes. Lots of folks chose to convert and the others paid taxes.
All in all it seems an odd way to convince people that you have the true path to whatever. |

The power to tax is the greatest source of earthly power.

Wouldn't the actual source lie in military might?
