Let your friends have the new cars and the monthly payments. Good luck to them. Having something totally custom is a lot more fun.

I have friends like that as well, and nothing gives me more enjoyment than giving them a lift from the dealer while their car is in for warranty work, in one of my many old jalopies
I was thinking of getting a TJ since I like the round headlights and they do have a decent aftermarket. I'll have to look at the TJ's and the YJ's and see what's out there. Not rushing anything.

There are pluses and minuses to each model which I would consider before buying.

Browsing my craigslist shows a few CJ's but they are all pretty much over priced mud rigs or half assed restorations with a big price tag. If I'm going to buy something old, I might as well just stick with my beetle.

A good friend of mine had a CJ7 or 5..can't recall but he pretty much restored it from the ground up and it was a budget build but came out beautiful. I really liked his and it's dead nuts simple to work on. You've got me thinking...I'll look into one of those. If I can find a non rotted out tub and frame id honestly consider it.

Heck, he painted his with tractor paint and if it got scratched he just sanded it down as rolled on a coat and blended it in.

Unless this is a vehicle that will spend most of it's time off-road, go for something with ABS and airbags.

Which is why I'm leaning towards a 2007- current model jeep.
