Yahoo has adopted the anal analytics on steroids across their entire platform and are not shy about hogging your system while the urchins feed. I avoid using that place anymore at all if I notice it. They really don't have any content you can't get from a smaller proctoscope. Google seems to be the implementation of NSA with its twin microshaft updates (and all browser updates) ever notice that not much is being trafficked in the network as to download, but the computer is whizzing away followed by an upload?

Whoa... did you actually say something positive about Google? I would put the flame suit on, I think spdrun's monitoring this thread.

They're sure not shy about scraping e-mail content and using it to display targeted ads in GMail. Look at the sidebar on the GMail web client and see how it changes with different messages

F'em. I've chosen not to voluntarily give them any more f'ing data than I need to.

I'm not terribly concerned.

There isn't much in my history other than Porn and PeachParts.

As a general rule, any entity (governmental, corporate, or human) which is on the path to excessive power should be deprived of power as much as possible. There's no such thing as a benevolent dictator in my book, and excessive concentration of power should IN ITSELF be a hangin' offense.

Here's hoping for a future anti-trust case against Google -- as it stands now, it has potential to do much more evil than Microsoft.

I'm sorry - I don't get the question?

I have solitaire on my Windows 98 box, and am non-discriminatory when it comes to porn.

I can think of all sorts of things to post in reply to this that would get me in trouble

I feel that Google knows the law better than those who write it...

Official Google Blog: Response to the DoJ motion

With that being said, I am not anti-google or pro-google. On the one hand, I do like the fact that they stand behind net-neutrality, but on the other hand, I am disappointed with the way they track users, and have an ad-platform that uses this tracking data.

For a plebeian like myself, I am not overly concerned. Some changes here, plugins there, and most tracking is disabled.

On the bright side, I hope my search history is at least somewhat entertaining for some people.

Between Tor, Firefox, DuckDuckGo, Ghosterly, Ad Block Plus, HTTPS everywhere, FoxyProxy and User Agent Switcher I think I'm doing ok. I'm just another Safari 4 user from Finland.

And 8 years later ... I wonder if they are not all gilded actors in the same stage bill who have already infected and enslaved all the world with technological reliance.

People on this forum are so quick to don their foil hats about everything without even a hint of how it all works. Google does not send personally identifiable information about anybody to customers in google analytics -- and advertisers aren't allowed to bounce it back. Google has the info, but none of their customers. Its no different than signing up on this site and providing your email address, IP, etc. Google just does it on a massive scale.

They are very sensitive about the data, so much so that they nerfed GA pretty badly. If you have a GA tag on your site you're allowed to get volume stats but again, nothing personally identifiable. Not even assigned user IDs. But hey, I love reading about how people freak out about how marketers somehow get their life story and information when in the vast majority of cases its simply smart audience targeting and strategy.

This explains why my bank, thousands of miles away, sent me a new card because Target, french company, also thousands of miles away, didn't share my personal information with entities around the globe, some probably operating across the Iron Curtain.

Don't be too quick to judge what people know or don't know. It's a big world out there. What makes you think you know? Sometimes I wear a tin foil hat but it is painted black.
