Price of cigarettes just went up a little bit Personally, I'm not opposed to making them average $20 per pack (they're already $13 in NYC) nationally. Don't ban them outright, just make them expensive enough so that people can't afford to smoke more than a few a day.
As a very occasional smoker, I tend to buy a pack, smoke a few, then get disgusted with myself and throw the last 3/4 of the pack away. |

Need to take the subsidies away from the tobacco farms. Let the smokers support their own habit without my tax payer dollars.

Thanks for the link. That one escaped my attention.
I am going to grow tobacco at home. I hope to grow different kinds so that I can wrap my own cigars. |

Completely whack. Tobacco companies have been somewhat dishonest over the years but there is some culpability on the buyer.

To start with, if smoking of anything, tobacco or otherwise is made illegal tomorrow, it wouldn't bother me one bit. That said, reality, however, is that it IS legal. That means that people are free to partake of these products AT THEIR OWN RISK!
I remember very well when the surgeon generals warning began being printed on every, single package of cigarettes put on the shelf. At the same time the entertaining cigarette commercials disappeared from TV. That was over fifty years ago. I find it EXTREMELY difficult, if not totally impossible to believe that there is anyone in the USA that has not learned that smoking has some serious risks. So the winner of this settlement had to know that he was not participating in a safe activity. I also doubt that anyone held him at gunpoint and made him smoke those cigarettes. It has been deemed legal to sell them and this guy took the risk to smoke the idiotic things. He's an idiot and shouldn't get a dime. Furthermore if any of my tax money beyond what the govt. gets from the seriously expensive cigarette tax on his healthcare, the taxpayers deserve a refund. Now, since EVERYONE is aware of the danger of these things, why have they not yet been made illegal? Answer? Because it represents such a huge amount of revenue for the government plutocracy. Something on the order of a buck and a half per pack goes to the govt. That gives them money to buy votes with. This is simply one more example of the fact that politicians don't care if you get lung disease or not. They don't care if you die an agonizing death due to tobacco. All they want is their stinking money. That is FACT folks. I'm very sorry that this fellow had problems, but it was his decision and total lack of brains that killed him. The cigarette just happened to be the instrument that put in the poison.

F'n ridiculous. Anyone who started smoking at any point after the 60's has no one to blame but themselves.
My grandmother died of emphysema so I never smoked a cigarette, although I enjoy the occasional cigar. That said, I don't care one way or the other. As long as they're legal, the federal govt is as culpable as the tobacco companies. Not coincidentally, the addiction to cigarettes is rivaled by the govt's addiction to the tax revenue.

Along those lines, when do the class action suits by alcoholics against Big Alcohol begin?

My dad is 85 and has been smoking since he was about 13. I suspect he gets as much enjoyment out of a good smoke these days as anything else that he does. He did lose a part of a lung years ago but it did not slow him down from lighting one up.
