Red face burried the mercedes in mud on wednesday.....

I thought i would share a story of what happened to me and my 300SD on wednesday. I was up staying the week with my sister in tallahasee(she goes to FSU), and while she was at class one day I decided to go for a drive. While driving, i saw this old dirt road and decided I would like to know what was down it, and since i had plenty of time, i decided to go down it. This dirt road reminded me more of an off road trail than a road, and i soon realized that is exactly what it was. I continue to drive down the trail, being certain that whatever i go over forward, i could go over in reverse if need be. I finally approach a sign that states "no motor vehicles past this point". As i back up to turn around into a turn around spot i saw before, i realize i'm facing a hill, that looks like fun to try to go up. Not being completely dumb, i decide to walk it first. I decided it was really soft, but do-able, so i went for it. Didn't make it up the first time, backed down, and got it the second through fourth time. After i got to the top, i simply put it in reverse and backed down, it wasn't too dramatic. I didn't ever go down the other side, as there was no way i could get back up it, unless i had a four wheel drive truck etc... I decided that was fun, and took off just driving down real roads again. It then started to rain, and i decided to fill up with fuel. It stopped raining shortly, so after i filled up with fuel, i decided to try the hill again. I got to the spot, and made a running start at the hill, i started to spin about 2 ft up it this time, due to the damp/wet clay/mud. Second time, gave a huge running start, and almost got to the top, almost getting stuck. Logic had started to kick in, telling me, hey, you can't do it now, it's wet out dummy. HOWEVER, logic was overruled by the other voice saying "your gonna let this hill beat you?? your gonna let this hill beat your car? you can beat this hill, give it another shot" Up i went, almost got it, and burried the rear wheels into the soft clay, which was now mud. Put it in reverse, figuring gravity would take over and i'd slide back down. I got nothing, just spinning tires. I finally rocked it out of that mess, and right into another one-and a worse one. as soon as my front wheels hit the ruts my rear wheels were in, my entire car centered out. My left rear wheel was spinning uselessly, even idiling in gear the wheel would just spin on it's own. front tires were burried into the deep ruts my rear wheels had just made, and the under-carriage was in the mud. I said to myself "F#$K", i'm screwed. I then remembered some stuff i had been tought by my uncle about getting unstuck, and decided what the hell i'll give it a shot. I first dug out all the wheels so that as soon as the car was rolling, they would have an un-obstructed path down. next, i started jamming rocks and sticks under the spinning wheel, and halfway deflated the other rear-drive wheel. none of that worked. I decided i would have to jack up the car, and find a huge log to stick under the spinning wheel. At first, the jack just sunk into the sand, then i supported it using an allied tool kit i have in my trunk as the base. Finally i was getting somewhere, i then found an old gas tank from an old car laying about 100ft away, and jammed it under the tire, that did it, once the car was off the jack it rolled right down the hill. Needless to say, i didn't try again. Although, there was that voice still saying "you let that hill beat you, you loser!"(this time i didnt' listen to that voice, and instead listened to the voice saying, get out of hear, it's getting dark!). thought some of you might find this mildly entertaining, or if nothing else, at least get some other "i was a dumb arse when..." stories going....
Ryan

true...when i get older i definately plan to have a four wheel drive around, something jacked up with insane tires on it! It really was quite fun, and getting stuck was kind of a rush. I invisioned myself having to call my sister to get her friend with a dodge durango out to get me!! Probably not that good on my 18 year old benz, but with the amount of time/money i spend on that thing i'm gonna have fun with it. If i wanted a car to just "drive" i would have kept my old century! i have way to much time on my hands.........

stuck story

I gotta stuck story.....

I was out just bumming around in my Samurai near Bridgeport Lake (Bridgeport, TX). I found a place that I could drive right down to the lakeshore. We were having a drought, so I was complacent about having the hubs locked, in 4X4 and speed. I came across this area near the shore that was about a shade darker than the surrounding dirt. I drove on thinking nothing of it. Bad idea. The vehicle bogged down to a stop. I got out to lock the hubs and went to my knees in this gunk with the consistency of yoghurt. I locked the hubs, got back in and threw the t-case in 4lo and the tranny in reverse. Two VERY brief attempts to move the vehicle resulted in it getting sunk down to the axles. It took a wrecker to get it out. The thing still has a slight shimmy at some speeds from this little adventure.
