I would stop driving before paying half that for car insurance. Currently the wives car has full coverage with a five hundred deductible on collision.
My daily driver basically liability with a few other compulsory items of a minor nature to me. Combined premiums are a little over a thousand but less than eleven hundred a year. The wife I think is high risk having written off two cars. I was surprised this did not push the rates higher than they are. At my age it is only three years until the province starts checking if I am still fit to hold a drivers licence. This is kind of standard here now. I noticed at seventy they started to ask some questions when I renewed my drivers licence. This is a five year permit here. |

Jeez, I can only guess that driving uninsured would be rampant there. Plenty of people couldn't afford that. Rates like that here would hit me hard. I have liability and uninsured motorist coverage on 2 vehicles for about $650 a year.

It's terra firma. People everywhere wanting a place to live. Detroit has plentiful water. Counts for something in this world. And I hear that you'd be surprised at what a beautiful city it is. Add to that family and roots and I'm not surprised at all that people still live in Detroit.

"Many folks in Detroit go to LA Insurance where they can buy a week's worth of auto insurance for the mere purpose of renewing their registrations." For that price, I'd pay someone in another town to receive my mail and register my car there. |

$2,200 a month?? I pay less than that per year, 4 vehicles with one as full coverage, and a teenager driving.
Wait...weren't they demolishing homes in Detroit area and taking it back to grasslands? Screw the insurance and car...get a horse and a wagon.

I think the insurance companies just figure if they still live there they must be suckers for punishment, so why not jump on the bandwagon.

With an average of 10.7K per/yr maybe one in ten is insured so then the average is pretty close to the grand per year that I pay for two drivers, and four cars.

Yipes, I'm >$2000/year as a primary driver on two cars, (Buick and Corolla), and I'm a teenage male . At least with a clean driving record.
A problem in the city near us (Lowell) and other places in the state as well is that, while MA has some pretty high requirements for insurance, NH requires no insurance... so a lot of folks for whom insurance is way too expensive register with fake addresses in NH instead. I went to driving school in Lowell, and there were several NH plates that were parked there for months on end. Occasionally, I'd say something to my instructor like, "Oh look, someone's visiting!", and she'd start grumbling about it . She and her husband had been hit by an uninsured NH plate a few years back, I believe.

This is your Gov't. at work - not the insurance companies. If it's $10,700 average per year per vehicle, the insurance companies have figured the risk factor to price it what is. It's a horrible environment to risk doing business for them, is what the average premium figure reflects.

I'm calling BS on this whole thread.
I just went to GEIKO's web site. Plugged in an address I found in zip code 48207. Put my self as a 47 yr old single male driving. 95 e300. $250/$500k liability, $500 deductible for comp/collision. Payment is $97 a month. When I changed the vehicle to a12 f150 it climbed to a whopping $107 a month. Also put in a nicer address in 48205 and the rate dropped to $105.

30 year old male living on Livernois Ave in the 48204. 100/300 liability, medical-only PIP, collision/comp with $500 deductable. 2004 Camry.
$289/mo. Ouch. If you're younger and/or want something better than a 2004 Camry, ouch. |
