double VANOS BMW cyl head job, first one
Just finished a cylinder head job on a double VANOS BMW X5. Pretty straight forward job that is made easy with the Bentley manual. Man, I wish they had those for the MB line of cars.
I had to purchase some tools to pin the crank and hold the cams in place and ended up purchasing a Smoke Pro machine to use for checking for vacuum leaks. It can also be used to smoke a/c systems. The original issue with the car was that it had a broken valve spring and leaking valves on three cylinders.

Which engine? Guessing the 4.0 V8? Tons of them have VANOS. BMWs engines are high strung but holy cow, are they incredible.

As a fairly recent BMW owner, I've been reading up on the VANOS rebuild. So far, mine hasn't been giving me issues (just replaced entire set of coils and sensors, though).
It used to be that you had to buy a new or reconditioned unit ($$$$) and with labor, could run you a couple of thousand $$$! Now you can just buy the VANOS seals and do the work yourself (if you are of that mindset). At least you only need to remove the valve cover and not the head!

I feel like I've been through a ringer on this one.
Had to go back in and check/set timing. Found idle control valve stuck and the MAF sensor not working. Sorted everything out and it finally runs like it is supposed to. Not to worry, got a '77 450SL in that I'll be bringing back to life.
