Think your kids feel entitled

Probably no contest to this...and I'm surprised this hasn't been posted here yet (apologies if it has, I did a search).

NJ teen suing parents won't get immediate support | 6abc.com

In NJ, kid leaves her home because she doesn't like her parents' rules, then sues them because they won't pay for her college tuition. It got thrown out of court, but there's another hearing down the road to see whether they are financially responsible. Meanwhile, the lawyer representing her (and also a friend of the family who had taken her in, big surprise there) has already massed $12k in fees.

I'm not sure there are enough facepalms in the world to adequately capture my reaction. As someone who worked their ass off at that age (and I know I'm not alone on this forum), and then worked their ass off through college to pay for it, this story absolutely stuns me. Toss her ass out on the curb and let her know what real life is like.

She's 18 -- legally no longer a minor. Good luck to her, especially starting life with $12k debt to her attorneys.

Well actually, I think there is something in financial aid for college that considers parents wealth until you are 26, or otherwise emancipated from them regards those programs.

I think thats where the question is, financially (and IIRC how it works in Jersey). But its still ridiculous.

A lot of people should not be allowed to have children, including that judge.

F***ing ungrateful c*nt. If my child tried that he/she would see me being like Tilley in the movie 'Tin Men' dumping all of my child's belongings out of the house.

I think what is worse than the kid, is the lawyer encouraging her to file this suit in the first place. She is likely still in the "kid" mindset, the lawyer has been around the block and STILL encourages it? Disgusting.

the laywer has "taken in" and 18 yr old... hmm - then to further make this more smelly is that he built a case against the 18 yr olds family.

anyone seen that episode of family guy where the dog is dating a teen who is dumb as rock - sounds like it.

This is true. Even at 18 your parent's income and assets are considered before you get finaid. "Oh just sell the house, they don't need the space anymore since you're moving out anyway"

In Indiana a parent is not responsible for the child's college unless the parents are divorced.

Unless that child is receiving any form of federal financial aid; Pell grants, Fed insured loans, almost all students get them.
Parents' income is indeed factored on the FAFSA form and the college financial aid office will arbitrarily determine an amount called "expected parent contribution", and then subtract that amount from the student's cost of attendance.

He took her in? Hmmm. Then maybe she let him in too which explains what is happening.

Says he is a friend of the family. Maybe the correct word should be "was", as in "WAS a friend of the family".

He is a friend to the family. Just more friendly to some than others, I suspect.
