I put ammunition and food first. In a total collapse scenario I don't see the value of gold. Pretty, sure but you can't eat it.

Enron showed us the fallibility built into the grid. If you haven't seen The Smartest Guys in the Room and the extra features on the DVD, it is worth a look.

The idea that it failed due to exploitation and not a physical or technical problem is further cause for concern. So much for conspiracy theory. The idea that greedy a$$ holes can bring the infrastructure down arbitrarily and at will is pretty scary.

Was a story out a month or so ago about a gun assault on some California substation. Problem was it happened about a year ago and wasn't an isolated incident.

You won't hear anything about it.

SJ Mercury news is following it. They updated the story a month ago. Phone lines expertly cut knocking out comms to most of Gilroy CA, 17 transformers down. 100+ shell casings found, NO fingerprints and nobody's claimed credit. Might have been only a test?

We've got enough at this house to last about 6 months if we lost power. Between the dried and canned meat, canned veggies, and other items, we'll do well. Fuel would be the thing that would most likely leave us stranded...but I do have a crank pump and a decent amount of hose, so in theory, we could siphon it from the local station, if needed.

I can go roughly 300 miles on a tank of fuel in the Tahoe, which is just enough to get us to the family farm, where we could live years without the grid. It's on the highest peak in the region, second highest in the state...so security wouldn't be an issue.

As you can see...we've run this scenario in our heads more than a few times. I was raised by a survivalist Vietnam Vet, who hammered preparedness in our heads. He's the one that decided to raise us on a farm, 2 miles from the nearest neighbor. My childhood was fun!

If you live in a City I think it would only be of temp Help until your Neghbors or the Local Gang find out you are living better then they are.

The FEMA has the right to confenscate Your Food. And, I am guessing the Politicians (and thier Families), FEMA and the Military get first pic of the Food and what dribbles back to the Population is not going to be enough.

I think there needs to be a Book How to Serve FEMA Officers.

There is Nice UK Movie called No Blade of Grass that deals with a Blight that kills all the Grass in the World (that includes all Grains). There is a scene in the Movie where the Military is attacking a Farm House to get Food the Farmer has hidden.

what sort of fool would live in a city if they were concerned about the collapse of civilization as we know it? The cities will implode at the first sign of anything shifting the status quo.

What kind of mileage does that Tahoe get in post-collapse conditions? Not sure I would want to bet my life on the answer (guess).

If I were really concerned and were talking about ~4 people, I'd get a pair of diesel motorbikes. Militarized KLRs or diesel Enfields.

Advantages:
(1) 60+ mpg
(2) Can weave their way around traffic and obstructions
(3) Can burn anything from heating oil to jet fuel to crappy canola oil, at least short-term

Meh I have enough firepower to form a new city state and steal what I need.

I only hope this situation happens after I score a T55 and my buddy a Deuce and a half!

Rule of thumb used for many years. Seven days is the average time frame on a serious closedown till the supply chain failure causes real problems.

I think cities may be the worse. Yet maybe more effort would be made to priority supply them first. Anyways hopefully nothing that drastic would take place.

Right now it is perhaps beneficial to find ways to reduce consumption of energy. I expect the cost to rise signifigantly enough to be noticeable at least in the shorter than longer term period. I think this is not an unexpected thing as the province I live in is actually helping people to reduce energy use in a meaningful and active way right now. If what I expect may occur does not they will be better off for the current initiative.

I'd use a new Diesel powered(Duramax, Powerstroke, or Dodge Cummins) powered tow truck that could push about anything out of its way.

Assuming that there was one I could find, unaffected by the EMP.
