Bye Bye power grid
Buy water!! buy mac n cheese!! buy more .22LR!!
Actually it's worrisome. A calculated assault on just 9 out of 55K interconnected power transfer stations could black out the whole country for up to 18 months. One particularly troubling memo reviewed by the Journal described a scenario in which a highly-coordinated but relatively small scale attack could send the country into a long-term literal dark age. “Destroy nine interconnection substations and a transformer manufacturer and the entire United States grid would be down for at least 18 months, probably longer,” the memo said. (1) There is not only one power grid, but three in the continental US (2) I doubt the entire country risks being blacked out for eighteen months, though the grid might operate at reduced reliability for that time period. (3) “Destroy nine interconnection substations and a transformer manufacturer and the entire United States grid would be down for at least 18 months, probably longer,” -- could the relevant hardware be sourced from abroad even if all possible US manufacturers were attacked? This being said, even a month-long blackout could be disastrous for things that need power not to explode or melt down, like certain factories or nuclear power plants. A plan to keep those facilities stocked with fuel for their backup generators for at least a year shoul exist. |

Personally, I prefer to keep my EMP bombs in lipstick cases.

For those of us who live off-grid, this isn't a problem to be concerned about.
If it happened in the USofA it sure would sort out the idiots pretty quickly. |

Yeah it is -- if a (poorly designed) nuclear power plant runs out of fuel for its backup generators and loses cooling, it could potentially concern us all. Radiation doesn't discriminate. On-grid, off-grid, smart, stupid, young, old. You're just as ill or dead.

Living off grid sooner or later requires interaction with items from the grid and in an EMP event, all kinds things will be gone quickly.
