New F1 V-6 Sounds Bad

I watched FP1 from Australia last night. I was not pleased with the sound. Granted I've heard many other vehicles sound worse (MotoGP anyone?), but I think this is the worst F1 cars have sounded in my lifetime. A sample:

F1 2014 First Onboard Lap | Red Bull RB10 | V6 Turbo Sound | Ricciardo @ Albert Park - 14.03.2014 - YouTube

Compare to last year's naturally aspirated 2.4 L V-8:

Kimi Raikkonen Onboard Lap - Australian GP FP2 - 2013 - YouTube

Some of the technical changes they've made are interesting to me as an engineer and mechanic, but I've had farts that sounded better than the new cars.

I hate how F1 has become so crazy with their regulations. I appreciate that they are trying to make things more exciting and even, but I feel like a no-holds-barred approach is more exciting from a technical standpoint. No doubt these engines are technical wonders, but its almost prohibitive for new fans to get involved with it-- such is the beauty of nascar. No DRS zones, no KERS, no exhaust blown diffusers, etc.

Also, agreed on the sound, though I think its splitting hairs, nothing beats the NA V10/V12s of the late 90s IMO.

It certainly does not sound as great as a v12 at song. What rpm are the v6's turning? Sounded low.

My Buick sounds better.

That V8 is something, though!

V6's with 90 deg. cylinder banks will always sound odd to me because of the 540 degrees of crank revolution for the entire engine to complete a cycle. You can hear this clearly listening to a Chevy 4.3 V6 versus the older 2.8 V6.

They go up to 15,000 but for some reason they sound like they're doing a lot less.

Half the exhaust pulses for a given RPM than the V12... V12 sounds "busier".

Dont they utilise a staggered crank to even out the firing.

Imagine, Mercedes and Red Bull Renault each had a car drop out in the initial segment of the race due to engine issues at the Australian GP this weekend. Looks like these hybrid turbo cars need a lot more sorting.

True, they do but it still seems like their trying to go against the laws of nature,,,

And they still sound weird and feel rough.

The 2014 engines sound like it's from a science fiction movie. Must be a lot better for the ears.
