This assumes no back doors in Google servers. A lot of email also transits the Internet in plain text. Mandating SSL puts Google where most well-run , email servers were in year 2000...

google scrapes your gmail messages to give you "relevant ads" so I don't think your privacy is in there anywhere.
Also, had anyone ever actually clicked on a google-generated ad much less bought something because of them?

I don't use gmail, but sent something to a guy with that account. Now I'm getting all kinds ads.

The play here might be to force NSA to give them one of those letters (like they did with that other email service who chose to go out of business rather than comply) so they can have their day in court. Google has enough $ to make this real.
