Keeping the old truck a going......

My 1997 K1500 Silverado reached 200,000 miles today. At it's current condition I don't see getting another 100,000 out of it being an issue barring any catastrophe.

Congrats.

It's amazing that just a couple of generations ago if you got to 100,000 miles without major issues it was a feat. I remember the days of 12 months, 12,000 mile warranties, minor tune ups (plugs, points, condenser) every six months or 6,000 miles, later to 12/12, then major tune ups (to include rotor, distributor cap and wires) every 20,000 miles, then carb rebuilds around 50 or 60K.

Anyway, keep on keepin' on!

Chevy's run forever if you keep the rust out of them.

Relative to a few automotive generations ago, they ALL last forever these days with reasonable maintenance practices.

BTW, good job on taking care of your truck!

Any issues with those Vortec head gaskets?

Congrats, Nate! I'm just over 255K with my '99 Suburban. 300K has been my goal, I'm trying like hell not to get too bored or frustrated with it. The transfer case is starting to make noise whether engaged or not despite maintaining it. I'm tempted to just keep driving it until it grenades and run it as a 2WD until I retire it. It still looks good, although we'll have to see how fast CT's new ice-melt concoction accelerates that process, so I'll keep it safe and running in the meantime.

If you want to make yourself cringe, figure out how much gas you've fed it over its lifetime and then calculate the cost.

Amateurs. Sir Gustav. At least a "3" sits in front of the left most digit.

I have been going threw mine this winter fixing a bunch of little problems. Last week I threw on a new set of rear shoes and door speakers. Other than that the truck is in good shape right now, everything works.

If I keep it longer this fall I'll replace the rear bumper which is pretty rusty and the drivers seat cushion. You can get the complete bumpers on ebay for $200 and the cushion is about $250 shipped. Its also developed a list to port so I might throw a new set of leaf springs under it this summer. Chevy parts are cheap so they are easy to keep going as they age.

CT must be using a cool new salt mix because I'm starting to get a bit of rust on it, but its a 10 year old truck so whatever.

It is and has been wreaking havoc.

Rusting body panels are one thing, premature rotting of brake lines is another. (Says the guy who just had to replace his brake lines on a '99 vehicle)
