Vote for the W123 to win over the Fox Body for best beater

Jalopnik has a contest ongoing, basically a March Madness for "beater" cars, called a Beat-Off...

Yeah.

Anyway, today is the FINAL matchup. The W123 beat out a ton of other cars to go against the Fox Body mustang.

As of this posting, there are only about 30 votes separating the two with the Fox Body narrowly ahead.

The Jalopnik March Madness Beat-Off Final!

Represent!

I'm sorry to break this to you guys, but as much as I love the 123's with over a million total miles of driving and maintaining them for my family, I had to vote for the Fox as the beater. If the category was something besides beater, I probably could have voted for the 123, which is better in almost every category.

The reason I consider the Fox better as a beater car, is the extreme difference in parts costs. In my way of thinking, in a beater car you should be able to rebuild the engine or put in a replacement engine for low dollars. The Fox wins out by a huge margin in this particular category.

My $0.02,

You don't replace or rebuild engines in a beater. You drive it until it quits and then get another one. My W123 has 332,000 and change miles on the original engine. This is not unusual for a W123. How many Mustangs get that far on the original engine?

Engines arent usually the problem with beaters. Its everything else.

I'm fully aware of that. I took one of my 240D's over a half million miles. I also took an '85 5.0 GT over 300,000 with no trouble at all.

Although I used the engine in my example, there is much more to a car than an engine. It takes parts and maintenance to keep ANY car on the road.

When I voted the benz was pulling away.

Anybody not voting for the benz and admitting it here should be banned for life...or at least warned!
