Try publicly showing your collection of raptor feathers.

I read that in the morning paper and found it extremely unusual. It seems possible that the old gent was not treated correctly on first glance.

Seems like excessive enforcement, or some "real" museum wants something he has and he won't give it up. Follow the money.

Got a permit for that?

That is what the law requires, as well as a hunting license if you want to use it. So then, are you OK with my feather display?

The antiquities act and other laws on repatriation of pot-hunted items is pretty broad and can ruin you. Pun intended.
I have a fairly large ruin on my grazing allotment. I'm the state site steward for it. State paid to completely fence it. It's remote and was pothunted over the years back in the 60s. There's a big difference between picking up arrowheads and trashing the walls of an 800 year old village looking for intact pots worth thousands of dollars. Not an innocent hobby by a long shot. Until the antiquities act, it was a career path in these parts.

Only if you have a permit for your feather display. Doesn't matter where they come from. Even your own permitted bird. Or road kill. Or natural molt. Even if you're using the roadkill feathers for trout flies.

Does the guy have kids? Kids that found out he was not leaving the collection to them?

I wonder what the warrant looked like? Maybe: We think the 91 year old guy has lots of all kinds of stuff, not sure exactly what it all is or if any of it is legal or not, but we want to go grab it all up and check it out for about 30 years and see if there is anything in there which might technically be prohibited.
