According to the story she has a large number of good points and a few negatives. The Muslim students were offended at this, made their problems known, and the University caved.

Perhaps the students/university should concentrate on what she said and why. Instead they chose to kill the messenger.

The interesting thing about this is that millions of people who have never heard of her will now be exposed to her views and lines of thought. This is something that would never have taken place if she had been given the degree.

Universities are very sensitive to such controversial people. Earl Butz, a local man who was sec of ag under Nixon, IIRC, made a racial joke in a public place to another person in a private conversation which was overheard and reported widely.

I cannot remember if he was forced to resign over it, but decades later his heirs wanted to donate some millions to Purdue and get a building named after him. At first PU was going to do it but people protested and they backed out.

It's good to see her voice carry some weight on this. It's absolutely good that a debate is heard on the nature of Islam. I can understand why Muslims who practice less severe forms of the faith are upset. We know that most of them get crazy around criticism of the prophet. It's not going to change overnight. I don't see this as some tragedy (the rescinding of the award), just part of the process, which is, uhhhh, ongoing.

One factor in the decision in my opinion, is the general mood of this country, in which it is increasingly permissible to deny women their rights. Ali's focus has always been on the rights of women and how they suffer under Islam.
