found something worse than the DMV, the Department of Inspections and Standards

I blew it, I tried to be official and call in an inspector to authorize paving an additional parking space for a rental building as is spelled out in city code, and where tenants have been parking for 50 years anyway and its just rutted dirt at this point.

All ive done is put myself on the radar for enforcement, as he said it was illegal, impossible, and would take a zoning ordinance that I would never get and all the neighbors would object to (as if they cared, people have been parking there since before most of the neighbors were born anyway).

I cannot afford to get on this guys bad side, as all inspections in a 20 block radius (where I manage two houses) go through him. I get on his bad side, im screwed for both houses if I want to do anything legally that will need an inspector.

So now I have to enforce deliberate non parking in this parking space, AND im kicking myself because if you walk around the neighborhood, there are perhaps 100 examples of exactly what he said is illegal to provide additional rental parking, paving grassy sections. Obviously none of these people tried to do it legally first.

Extremely annoying. The whole idiotic rule is based on property percentage of grass vs pavement. My current percentage is correct, if I add pavement to a dirt swatch, im now in the illegal column. I MAY be able to brick the parking space and get around this. I don't need city approval to lay brick patios on property, so we will see, perhaps there is a way to get what I want done without attracting enforcement

Hats off to you for trying to follow the rules. Unfortunately it sometimes seems that the people who spit in their face have an easier go of it. A sad state of affairs.

Dont bother with the paving. Just grade the dirt and leave it as is, if people have been parking there already.

The reason why i wanted to bother in the first place is the location of a gas line valve fitting, and the gas meters for the building.

Both are on that side, and the meters are at the perfect height to be hit by a bad parker, while anyone parking there drives right over the gas line valve port in the grass strip between sidewalk and street.

These valves are everywhere, so i know they can be driven over if supported by pavement or concrete, but i have no idea what forces might damage it if the full force of a car is pushing on it while set in dirt.

In short, the current situation is a bit shady, and needed some offical improvments for my peace of mind, like a safety cage for meters, concrete for fitting, ect

Lol, this is providence remember, he may have been waiting for me to offer a bribe.

Not too long ago, thats how it was done locally. I will say that federal crack down on graft has really improved the city. So in this case big government is keeping small government in line, and its at the stage where the immediate past of bribery and mob involvement is a source for jokes now. Decent improvement, but 20 years ago i could have given the guy 100 bucks and gotten a permit.

Few things work as quick as smoothly operating illegal graft.

They use this sort of thing under the white house lawn. Your inspector won't even know it is there. https://www.coregravel.ca/core-grass/

Can you apply for a variance through the ZBA or something?

Going out of one's way to follow the rules is stupid. I pity anyone who goes out of their way to suck off a gov't functionary -- "Sicilian friends" had the right frame of mind. Do what you have to, talk as little as possible.

IMPROVED the city? How is not being able to pay some officious cock sucker $100 to go piss off and let you do what you need to do to keep running your business an improvement?

Shame that the Feds got involved. Hopefully this country will end up bankrupt and corrupt in another 10-20 years, so that things will run smoothly once again. And hope that that particular building inspector falls down a flight of stairs and snaps his neck like a dry twig when inspecting another building. If he ends up looking like Christopher Reeve, he won't be able to hassle honest people much.

It makes a lot of sense when avoiding these government rules (which are generally based in reason, but do need alteration from time to time) results in an enormous fine and more when you are caught.

Therefore, I go out of my way to follow the rules.

Be nice to your neighbors (or slip them a few bucks) and they won't complain to the pigs ... or if the spot was already paved, you should have just bought some gravel and chipseal the thing without asking.

You're just repairing severely damaged existing pavement. But yeah, brick doesn't seem like a bad solution. Or perhaps a sheet of the steel matting that was used to build WW II era airfields in the Pacific islands
