.22 ammunition

I just picked-up a couple of bricks and there were lots still on the shelf. A local store, not a chain.

Also looks like AR prices are coming down.

Nice when it shows up. But I'm pretty sure if you go there again tomorrow it'll be gone. I think 22 will be scarce for years to come. In fact I don't believe it will be easily available in my life time. Too many prepper nuts out there, too many AR15 wannabees in 22 cal wasting it all and too many anti-gun agenda freaks constantly stirring up trouble feeding the buying frenzy in the two aforementioned groups.

What did they cost you Bot?

I'm in the process of cleaning out my parents house to sell it. It's wearing me out but there is a little good to it. I have come across a good bit of ammo, although most of it in calibers that I don't shoot. I did, however find about a brick size stash of Remington .22.

I wish the preppers would stop adding to their 1M round collections so I could go plinking again.

I have been popping off 5.56 because I can get it, even though its still in the .40 cent a round range.

Eventually you would think people would run out of money?

Yeah, I guess those of us who like to shoot will have to take up muzzle loading and start melting down wheel weights.

I have a friend in Ohio that regularly scores .22lr in 525 boxes. He grabs all he can for a couple of us, never charging more than $1-$2 more per box to cover gas. With the number of .22 rifles and handguns we have, we wind up going through one box and part of another each time we visit the range. We're only sitting on 2500 additional rounds as back-up, because we've already experienced the taste of not having it...and didn't like it.

I read in a magazine in the past 3 or so months, that production of .22lr is basically running at full steam. It's not necessarily preppers that are buying and holding, it's a lot of new gun owners. Sales of .22 caliber firearms has skyrocketed since the end of 2012, and a sizeable percentage of those sales are to first time gun owners. It's the perfect caliber to start with, because traditionally, ammo is plentiful and cheap.

I'm sure that as long as D.C. backs off of their drive to make more restrictive gun laws, that this will level out in a few years. Hell...Obama will be out of office soon enough, and we'll have an R in office. Give it 3 years from now, and you'll see it all over the place...IMHO

I don't shoot .22 very often. I think I have 2 or 3 525 boxes in the ammo cabinet and a bunch of .22winmag. My Marlin lever is the only .22 I have that I actually enjoy shooting.

For plinking and critters I prefer a light 9mm load any day. 3.8gn of Bullseye under a cast 115gn round nose I can load for about 4 bucks a box of 50. That load is just enough to be accurate out to 50 yards or so and reliably cycle my Mini-14 and pistols. Dirt cheap to shoot.

I asked an ammo industry inside about the rimfire shortage at SHOT. He was honest with me.
“Everybody is loading rimfire as fast as they can with the machines they have,” he said. “The problem is, the margins on rimfire are so low it doesn’t make sense to invest in new equipment and expand production. We’ll catch up eventually.”

That's it in a nutshell. They aren't going to invest in increased .22 production. It's not worth the investment. I see a very long term shortage unless the number of new shooters somehow falls off. Who's in the White House won't affect it. The days of popping into the LGS on your way to the range for a box of .22 are over.

In three years you'll have Hilliary in the white house and things will get a lot worse.

Seems to me someone could import the stuff and make a killing. Figuratively of course... I've seen some foreign manufacture stuff occasionally. Don't see why we can't import more.

They will ramp up production if the demand continues. They are concentrating on larger caliber rounds with higher margins.

I know Obama is trying to outlaw everything firearm related that's imported as well. So making it cheap in Russia is probably out.

Wait. Did I miss something? There's a Mini-14 chambered in 9mm?
