I always liked those vintage Oldsmobile 88's, but I have never seen an all black Rocket 88 coupe like yours. They were restyled a bit for 1954, the first good looking ones as I recall were the 1948s, especially the convertibles that year.

Has yours got the hydramatic?

Yours would really shine in comparison to the ones in Cuba that are still around. (thread I posted today) Cubans love their old American cars - Wonderful little tribute - (45+ mins.)

When I was a kid in kindergarten (in 1953, coincidentally) my Uncle Kermit and Auntie jewel's son Kent, had an awesome 1950 Oldsmobile coupe that was all souped up - he was in high school, and I loved the look of that old Rocket 88!

Those were the days that Oldsmobile was the "hot" racer from GM, the days of Tom McCahill's road tests in Popular Mechanics magazine.

~~

I've got a classic too -- it's a 1967 Mercury Cougar, I nabbed a couple of years ago - (in storage since in a warehouse in San Jose since 1988), totally original with just 39k on the clock, completely original, too.

The local newspaper did a story on it about a year ago:

I used to have a '63 Dodge Dart. Can't seem to find a picture of it. It had the non power assisted drum brakes on all four wheels, no seat belts, a non-padded dash, and the skinny rigid driver-impaling steering column. I installed a 360 V-8 with duals and a four barrel in place of the original 225 slant six. It's probably better that I sold it.

I'm doing a few minor repairs to my'64 Galaxie and hope to have it out for a picture in a week or two. I'll try to remember to post a picture then. It's a poor boys classic though, not a show car like that one. I pieced it together from two cars that I bought on the cheap.

Thanks all. That Cougar is lovely. This 88 was my father in laws until he passed in 2010, I believe it is a hydramatic. I am the 3rd owner, legit 33k mile car . My other American toy is my 65 F100

There is a white ford pickup that I keep seeing at the local lumber yard about that year. Looks like an ideal candidate.
