I was invited into one of GA Tech's hardest to get into programs

My brother and I applied and were wait listed for the Grand Challenges program at GA Tech but we both just got emails with an invitation to join. This program is harder to get into than the Honors program so I am very excited to be able to join it. It consists of 110 students, we live in a dorm together, and basically the point of the program is to work together on "grand challenges" facing society, but what is unique is that the University will then fund your group to go out and implement that solution if you can persuade them that it is worth it. One group is going to Africa for a month this summer to install a water irrigation system they designed, all paid for by the university. The program is only a few years old and is a pet project of the president of GA Tech so one of the perks of the program is that once a week there is a breakfast with top faculty of GA Tech (such as the President, VP, deans, etc) where the students get to ask them questions and discuss things with them in an informal setting. There is also a weekly lunch where we get to talk to top professors in the same manner.
One nice benefit is that we get free Woodruff Passes which are normally $20 for Tech students but make symphony tickets unsold 48 hours before the concert free and only $12 for additional ones. I know I will be there frequently, ASO has a very good program for next year.

Congratulations. Please just make sure you end up with a BS or BE in a well known field. The grand challenges are very important, but not well known. You don't want to have to explain your degree to employers, especially the non engineers in recruiting.

Way to go man! They didn't have any program like that when I was there. Sounds neat.

One bit of advice: Ma Tech isn't a University and students/alumni will give you a bit of grief if they hear you call it one.

Ohh, this is just like an additional course, an elective. I will be majoring in ME. This is an additional thing to set me apart from other Tech students when looking for internships and of course jobs later on.

Well I thought if an institution offered various degrees in different fields in both grad and undergrad programs they were an university. Guess I'll have to get used to the unique ways of thinking here.

It qualifies as a university if they grant degrees in both arts and sciences. You can't get a BA at Tech, so no university status. Folks who want a BA can go to that alleged university in Athens.

Not a university? Seems to me that it is. It calls itself a university. I've never heard that not offering a BA disqualifies a school as a university.

Georgia Institute of Technology. Why would a tech school issue BAs or MAs ? It's a university, a TECH university.

Okay that makes sense, and I know I'm supposed to hate UGA but that is a fine institution, just not for engineering lol.

Every time you post a thread about this subject, I leave it open as a tab and mean to reply to it later so that I can do it justice... and then the tab closes somehow and I forget to reply... .

So, congratulations. It sounds like you'll have a really good education there .

Traditionally a "University" is an Educational Entity that offers Courses/Matriculation/Degrees/Diplomas in ALL educational endeavors.

I.E.:
Science,Medicine(Which is an ART,not a science),Arts,Engineering,Etc.,Etc.

Given those constricts: I'm not sure there is a "REAL" University inside the
Boundaries of the State of Georgia.

BUT, With a Degree from either The "Rambling Wreck" or "Bulldog" you can
hardly go wrong.
