Picked up a used Thinkpad
X201. Paid $250 (not great deal, but OK) for something with better specs than a MacBook Air. 6 GB RAM, faster i5 processor, great battery life - 6 hr without recharge so far. Only catches are no webcam (can be added with a $15 kit sold on Fleabay) and VGA only output unless you use the docking station (who needs it with streaming devices).

I've used IBM/Lenovo products for years personally and professionally and have mixed feelings with them. When it comes down to sheer performance, even though the macbook may be spec'd lower they perform better for a lot of things IMHO. For example, my last job I used a macbook air for some pretty heavy data analysis (SPSS/Excel/R) and I'm barely able to do the same types of analysis with the same data types on Lenovo desktops, despite having much higher spec. I can't really think of a good reason why except the UNIX/DOS difference and the architecture being different. For $250 though you'll get a lot of use out of it, probably beyond most people's general computing needs anyways. I hope you aren't doing heavy data analysis at least!

If I wanted to run a UNIX-like OS, Ubuntu and Debian have basically perfect support for the X201's hardware.

I like Lenovo, have a few laptops and one of their mobile phones.
My phone at the moment is currently a Lenovo K900, and have a T400, T520, and X1 Carbon. All rock solid, and all have taken tons of abuse. The X1 Carbon fell out of my GMC, and took a 4 foot drop like a champ.
