This happens a lot more than people probably realize, most notably when a 18 year old kid has a relationship with a 15 year old kid...every so often you hear about it in the news about someone who was arrested for it (usually when the parents don't like the new boyfriend), of course depending on state. Kind of sad IMHO. When I was a senior in HS, I was definitely eying some sophomores without giving thought to the fact that it was potentially illegal. I guess 41 and 16 is more extreme, sometimes those relationships last though so who knows.

I know a parent of a 16 yr old daughter whose older brother ratted her out for going out drinking with some older boys. When they returned ol' Dad was waiting outside and got them out of the car. Told his kid to go inside. Forgot to mention ol' Dad is a SFC-USAR and drill instructor. "You kids had my child drinking and she is under-aged and you gave her the booze." Then got the kids to give him their driver's licenses. They were all pie-faced drunk. Had them sitting on the ground in his front yard. It was after midnight. Then he called each parent and told them where their drunk kids were and to come get them or the police would. Also found out which club let them in and called the club owner the next day (not the mgr) and said his next call would be to the police if the owner didn't start firing people. The club had violated underage laws and was on probation so the owner did fire the mgr and doorkeeper.

Needless to say, Dad did not with any popularity with club owner, club manager, doorkeeper, parents, or drunk kids or his daughter.

But like he said, "I'm not here to be my daughter's best friend."

16's legal in Nevada, and quite a few other places. Shouldn't have done it in Texas. Or should have just kept quiet about it.

And what did he achieve, is his daughter a model citizen now? And what about the girl's responsibility?

We won't know for a while, will we?

In my opinion, having raised 3 of my own and been involved in raising a number of others (it takes a village, you know), doing nothing is the same as approval.

Do you approve of that kind of behavior? I don't, regardless of age. But I especially disapprove of youngsters acting that way. In my opinion, it helps form behaviors for life.

Sounds quite a bit like me...I'm not here to be my kids' friend. I'm here to raise these kids to be productive members of society...responsible and respectable. Anything less, and I will have failed more than myself, but my children, too.

I've told my kids that if they wanted a friend, they had many chances at school to make some.

Same here for my 3 daughters.

I followed that up when each turned 18 telling them that they were of legal age and could do anything they wanted. Then I reminded them that their mother and I could make a similar choice as well, and their choices would influence the level of support they would have.

A father's role is well stated above, it's not easy, but it's the best gift you can give your children.

I have the love and respect of my 3 kids, now that they are pretty much grown and independent, and we are proud that they have learned to be responsible and independent.

Jim

Amen to that. I felt a sort of vindication when my kids transitioned to adult friends.

What a bunch of hard ass people. Congratulations, all you have done is further glorify drinking and defying their parents wishes. ****, Italians learn by age seven or eight not to drink too much and then everything is fine because it's never "taboo" or a forbidden fruit.

Kids are always always going to do exactly the opposite of what their parents tell them ninety percent of the time because they have to learn most things on their own. Remember the first time you learned to make a cut away from your body? Not the first time your dad told you, the time you learned it because you were cutting toward yourself and ended up with a giant gash across your hand lending evidence to the theory it's safer to cut away from your body? It's like that. Sadly just like some people never grow up (in the irresponsible bad way) others literally never learn.

Of all the kids I grew up with across fifteen different states, only one or two of them who had really restrictive parents have made something of themselves. All the rest went ape**** wild in college, many dropped out, some came into the family way and dropped out, and a few graduated and found jobs not commensurate with their level of education.

Way to come to conclusions at variance with reality.

The dad I mentioned in the story has dinner wine or beer with his kids sometimes, but not as a daily ritual. When my kids were growing up I would allow them a glass of wine, watered at first, and later straight.

In our teen years we all screw-up. I'll bet even you did. That's part of the teen experience -- to push the limits to learn what it means to be an independent adult. It is the adults role and obligation to guide teens lest they grow into psychopaths. Sign in to read: Orphan elephants go on the rampage - 20 July 1996 - New Scientist
