Did you know that the very first Presidential Helo was developed for Eisenhower? He had requested one to take him to his vacation home and to the golf course. That was in 1957.

And he did not like what he received, so a year later a new one with an onboard restroom and A/C was purchased.

The old Marine One was OK until G. W. Bush showed up and he was not impressed. So a new one was ordered and $6,100,000,000 was allocated by Congress to build a fleet of them. By the time Bush left office the bill was up to $11,000,000,000 and still not one had been delivered or even started. Obama was handed a estimate of $13,000,000,000 in 2009 and pulled the plug on the whole show.

The current Marine One and all of its' back-ups are custom versions of an existing ship. Development started about nine months ago with an off the lot stripper model and the Secret Service customized it to meet their, and not the President's, demands.

Oh, and the answer to your original question is: Yes, among other things.

Just for some information:

Bush took over 1,000 days of vacation during his 8 year presidency. Over 100 days a year.

In comparison, Obama has taken less than 22 days a year on average.

The only president to date to take less vacation time than Obama was Clinton.

Yeaaaah.

The pulled the plug on the contract because Agusta got it and took on Lockheed Martin to make their bird seem "American Made" even though it was 100% Italian and better than the S92. So they yanked the contract I beleive this was in 2009.

Just because Congress appropriates money doesn't mean it was spent.

Now that the Italians are gone the contract went back to Sikorsky. Having said that the S92 is an aging aircraft and if anything happens with the contract its anyone's guess. Marine One seems to be a very low budgetary priority and their is no reason they can't be kept in the air for another decade or so.
