Spectacle of a very fat man being taken into custody in my neighborhood.

As is often my daily custom and routine when not on-the-road, I take a walk from my home office out to the mailbox around mid-afternoon to collect the U.S. Mail, M-F.

During this walk yesterday, I noticed (4) police cruisers lining the side of my public access lane. Two residences down the lane, in the front of yard area was a very fat 40 or so year old man, that looked right off the screen of a Dukes of Hazard TV show, surrounded by (4) very muscular policemen. I'd say the old boy would weigh-in at 400+ pounds. He was visibly upset, gesturing with his forearms as he was telling his tale to the policemen. I decided to take a spell to see what was probably going to go down - (4) officers taking him down.

After what looked like he was being warned to leave of his own volition for about 5 minutes, the man was handcuffed after first showing the resistance of not putting both his hands behind his back willingly. It took the officers two sets of cuffs to bridge the wide gap behind his back. This took a minute to accomplish.

As the spectacle unfolded, before being walked to a police cruiser for the ride to jail, the man in custody started hurling words in my direction soon after being cuffed - he was bobbing his head up and down with raised voice, apparently disturbed by being watched by the general public. He was a good 60 yards away, so other than his high-pitched voice, I couldn't make out anything the old boy was yelling.

As this was a domestic disturbance involving family members in some sort of disagreement, the raggedy a**ed very beat Yukon he and his very fat female partner had arrived in, remained overnight in front of the residence. Late today, the truck was gone.

I've been wondering if the huge, Billy Carter look-alike man would be coming around this vicinity for some retribution after being bonded out of jail at some future time - as his custom of visiting either his Sister or Mother or MIL - the elderly woman that lives there has been somewhat routine over a number of years. Time will tell.

As to being fat and as to getting arrested.

I am very aware of my weight and take efforts to control it, but it's pretty under control (it's average for my height) because I do avoid dessert unless it's a special occasion and don't eat big portions.

Unfortunately many folks don't and grossly obese people abound. I guess they gorge on fast foods, huge sodas and sugar. Some of it must be cheap. if they are on a budget. Certainly the restaurants seem to supersize everything and I simply avoid that by only eating till I feel satisfied and put the fork down and LEAVE it down.

Like many I have been taught to clear my plate, growing up in a white middle class suburb in the 1960s likely my experience was typical . "Remember the starving children in China" is what I have been told". Over and over.

Not to easy to unlearn that one though. Probably many people here have heard that one too.

My view now is that NO food is worth getting really fat over. No food at all.

Responsibility for one's weight in the end is with YOU. This can be tougher if you live alone.

As to that guy you saw, his biggest mistake was screaming and arguing with cops.

It was nothing personal, they were just doing their jobs. Had he stayed cool calm and respectful, he may never have gotten arrested,

Acting nuts around them is a pretty good way to end up with their bracelets on.

One of the best nuggets of advice I EVER heard, was from a LEO in San Francisco I worked with in the Courts.

He told me: WHATEVER you do, don't get arrested, not even booked and released. Just don't GO there.

Well I never have been arrested. Not EVER. Don't ever WANT to be.. I toured the SF jail one time and it it looked like an utter chamber of horrors, both the male and female tiers.

Just the noise alone in there is unbearable. One of my good LEO friends was African American and a really smart guy. Sometimes he got rotated to the jails upstairs for a shift of guard duty; Told me that one thing he did that kept things more peaceful was to keep the TV sets in there was to tune them all to "Soul Train".

And he told me, "I can't relate to any of this: If I was ever sent to jail, I tell you for sure, I'd come out of there having earned a PhD."

I guess lots of people get all their material and cultural references from TV.

the simpsons tv show has been around for 20 plus years, it is the longest running television show in history. even my 93 year old grandmother has heard of it, and she hasnt turned on a tv since probably the 70s.

i call BS on the idea that youve never head of the simpsons. even saddam made a reference to it during operation desert storm, which was hilarious.

I have HEARD of it but nothing more.

Back at work once in the 1970s in our lunchroom a bunch of post adolescents were nattering on about something on television called "Charlie's Angels".

I had *NO* idea who they were or what they did.

Much later on a heard a reference in the papers about it - some TV show about female cops that had the scriptwriters having them run up and down hills so that they could be filmed with their boobs bouncing.

Inane!

Keep watching your TV if you love it so much. I have been in car dealer service departments, and hospital waiting rooms where the damn things were on - so I have been involuntarily subjected to some TV - people laughing @ things that are not funny, holding a can of motor oil or a roll of toilet paper to their face and smiling and telling you to buy it.

Can't stand to see stuff like that.

Maybe for folks that like to watch team sports stuff it is ok, I guess, though from what I have seen it is a tradition in this country to drink copious amounts of alcohol, usually beer, while doing it. I know what a Sports Bar is btw. But would only go there if I was desparate to use the bathroom and couldn't find one elsewhere.

There are plenty of gambling casinos in Northern Nevada, and I am perfectly willing to go in for a quick meal @ odd hours or not when all else is closed, and use the restrooms.

But I hate being in places which are that noisy, crowded with grim unsmiling people, totally filled with tobacco smoke and no clocks anywhere.

Coincidentally I know that there is a LOT of gambling addiction amongst Nevada residents. Just imagine that.

you dont have to watch tv to be familiar with popular culture, since things carry over into the non televised realm. Concering charlies angels, i find you aversion to televised bouncing boobs pretty funny since you are all about them otherwise.

the "war of the worlds" radio program happened decades before my birth and ive never heard it, but i know of it.

toys ,breakfast cereal, mountains of other crap have been spawned by the simpsons, which are animated. you purchase something anywhere, you might see a monstrous bright yellow skinned family with no eyelids and terrible overbites.

however, everyone gets their fix one way or the other. you look down on those hopeless peons watching tv, but how much time do you spend on a computer? ,its all relative.

I don't watch a lot of TEE VEE, but there is some brilliant stuff on it, including the Simpsons. I have a pal with this pseudo-snobby attitude - declared television to be a wasteland back in the 70s. Won't watch anything that's not on PBS. I gave up on trying to convince him he should give the Simpsons, Breaking Bad, Homeland etc. a try a long time ago. It's just... BENEATH him.

Maybe he will, maybe he won't. I guess you have been observing him more than I observe my neighbors unless it is some hottie in a bikini. But as far as that goes, if you are into fat or muscular guys, more power to you.

I know if you are black, it is a race but not sure if being fat is a race.
