Happy B day...

July 2, 1776.

The Passing of The Declaration of Independence - John Adams - HBO - YouTube

Politicians these days would have their jello spines fold under the weight of voting on actual life changing decisions and laws.

But back when proper statesmen roamed in the halls of Congress they did do some pretty good stuff.

Could you imagine modern day fact cat politicians standing up for their principles and risking everything they have to vote on something like this? I mean half of these guys had British Army units hunting down their families and friends and their business and assets were on their way to being seized.

Its very easy to "stand" for something when all your counting is votes and dollars, and not British hangman's nooses, and lead shot.

There are still men among us who would do the same thing if necessary. Women too, but they are not necessarily in congress. If we had an urgent hour of need these people would step forward and run if needed, I believe. Heroic times create heros from ordinary folks who did not know they had it in them. Do I? I don't know but I hope so.

Couldn't agree more Hattie....
The degradation of our society is nowhere as obvious as it is in our representatives.

For goodness sakes, don't read the Declaration of Independence. Some things are too radical and best forgotten.

Paul Giamatti is such a great actor.

He was also fantastic in the movie Sideways.

Watching this video of the voting, and hearing the Declaration of Independence being read is very moving.

My immigrant ancestor arrived in the Massachusetts colony in 1630.

When the Declaration of Independence was passed, my ancestors had already been in the American colony for 7 generations.

I have three direct ancestors who fought in the revolution: My 6th great grandfather and his son, who served in the New York state militia; and his grandson, who served in the Continental army.
