BUT my BMW has the blind spot monitor. And that really works, too. Especially to warn you when a very fast moving vehicle approaches you in the lane you are about to change into, even when you are signalling the lane change already that you are preparing to make.

Gizmos like adaptive cruise control could help too when traffic stops ahead of you lightning fast. ESPECIALLY if the car in front of you has tail lights that don't work.
While it is true that nothing beats driver attention for now, drivers make mistakes. If this is something that can add on, why not?

VW made a funny commercial about the radar avoidance self braking system. I'll try and find it

I may be able to afford it in 15-20 years. I may need it by then as I will be in my 80s.

Around here verizon tmobile att and sprint do not have any towers. We have only one company uscell and you have to be on the deck or outside. One of the benefits of being rural. Keeps the riff raff out. haha

There was a similar argument about MB when ABS became standard. The argument was that the F150 did not stand a chance...and look where it is now.

I'm still not a fan of driver aids, but this technology will have its buyers. There will be a certain subset of current steering wheel holders who would prefer a car that drives itself. I don't think they're too far away from getting what they want. Next question: If you're in a car that drives itself, in which all you do is punch in a destination and the car does the rest, can/should you still be able to get a DUI if you do so while soused? This may soon be a very non-academic question in my neck of the desert.

I would say it depends. Do I want to drive a daily commute to work if it is thru stop and go traffic? Probably not. I'd rather sit back and let someone else do the driving. Of course, I will still roll down the window and swear at people. Better yet, install a huge air horn and loudspeakers so I don't have to roll down the windows. Faster response time, you see.

I wouldn't think so any more than you being drunk in a taxi. OTOH, if you do a manual override and start driving that car, obviously. I guess it should depend on who is in control. You or the computer.

The technology amounts to another stepping stone along the way to fully autonomous vehicles, which, when the various technologies find maturity, will change culture around the world.

Recently, I saw a video in which a car acted as it's own parking valet, driving itself into and out of a space in a parking garage. Given that would be a more controlled environment than the open road, that is likely the first step to auto autonomy.

Accordingly self parking technology first reached the public in about 2007 and has gotten pretty good.
Which cars park themselves best? Challenge results

But the future is just “about the middle of the next decade…”

Autonomous cars? Ha! Check out Mercedes' autonomous semi. | TechnologyTell

Hey, it may save my life one day, so I'm all for it.

Especially since I spend more time on two wheels these days, and people really don't keep an eye out for us two wheeled fiends.

Umm because with age, things break. Oh but you can turn it off, so what if it breaks in the "on" mode?

Yeah I don't see anything wrong with this technology. I trust the technology far more than the dimwit behind the wheel sitting in the car behind me.

Why would you want to turn it off in the first place? I would be more worried if it broke in the OFF mode at which point I would get it fixed just like anything else on a car.
