Microsoft To Counter Chromebooks

Here's Proof That Microsoft Is Terrified Of Google's Chromebooks | Business Insider India

During the company's Worldwide Partner Conference on Monday, Microsoft announced that extremely cheap Windows 8.1 notebooks will be coming soon from HP, Acer, and Toshiba.

HP will launch a $199 laptop called the Stream, according to The Verge, while Acer and Toshiba plan to release notebooks starting at $249.
Acer's notebook will come with a 15.6-inch display, while Toshiba's will feature an 11.6-inch screen. We have yet to hear any details about HP's upcoming laptop.

Luckily, MS isn't building them, unlike their tablet PCs, the Surface.

Fighting for dominance of the bottom. The consumers benefit from competition. This should be fun! More please!

I don't get why people would, since an Android tablet or laptop (they exist) is superior in every way. ChromeOS is too cloud-dependent, which is great if you have a 24/7 Internet connection. Portable devices haven't reached that stage yet.

Most devices have the capability of net access 24/7 . . . what are you referring to?

Speed and availability are greatly variable based on location. A good ecosystem of offline apps vs doing virtually everything in a browser is a Godsend. ChromeOS can do some things offline, but it pales as compared to Android in that respect.

This is just time-share computing by another name -- this paradigm got its throat slit in the 70s when the PC came around. For good reason.

Of course the real problem I have with ChromeOS is that it rams Google's ecosystem up my anus forcibly. With Android, I can do most things with a private server and give virtually no data to Google without loss of functionality. Not so with ChromeOS if you want a remotely usable system.

I think I'll keep using the used Thinkpad X201 that I bought last month, upgraded to SSD. Fast, functional, can dual-boot Win 7 and Debian for the best of all worlds And it cost under $300!

Newegg has a refurb X201 (160GB/4GB) for $324 . . . swamp in a SSD . . . I don't think the math is under $300 even when a refurb is at $240

Bought used off Craigslist. I got the SSD essentially for free.
